The British Trust for Ornithology (BTO)
is a charity which carries out research on Britain's birds. It supervises
many research schemes, including the ringing scheme and the Breeding Bird
Survey, which provide invaluable information for conservation organisations.
The BTO has also organised the two breeding bird atlases and a winter atlas
of Britain's birds.
Although BTO surveys do not always
apply to Shetland, many others do. There are several breeding bird survey
squares looking for surveyors, for example.
The BTO
Representative for Shetland, who is also Secretary of the Shetland Ringing
Group, is Dave Okill.
