At sugar at Eswick there were 26 Satellites,
2 Angle Shades, a Brick, a Dark Sword Grass and 2
Emmelina monodactyla, while there were
4 Mottled Umbers, a Dark Sword Grass
and a Rusty Dot Pearl at actinic light and single Diamondback Moth,
Acleris hastiana and Crosidosema plebejana at
actinic light.

A Red-line Quaker was caught at Lea Gardens, Tresta - the first for
Shetland, while a female Barred Chestnut there is the second for Shetland.

There were 2 Large Wainscots at light at Eswick.

There are single Red Admirals at Baltasound, Brettabister at Nesting,
Ham on Bressay and Ocraquoy and 2 at Kergord.
A Dark Swordgrass and 2 Bricks were recorded on sugar at
Eswick.

At Tresta there was a worn Sallow and a Honeysuckle Moth.
A Herald was at light at Baltasound.

At Eswick, there were 3
Bricks, 3 Heralds and a Dark Sword Grass on sugar and 6
Bricks, 3 Dark Sword Grasses, a Herald and 2 Common Wasps
in the traps, as well as 21 Silver Ys.
At Voehead, Bressay, there were 4 Bricks and a Red Sword Grass
on sugar.
Best on Unst were island record totals of 98 Large Yellow Underwings
and 13 Rosy Rustics at Norwick.

There is a Red Admiral and 2 Large Whites on Foula and 3 Red
Admirals at Eswick along with the first confirmed record of Common Wasp
there.
In the trap at Eswick, there was a Dark Sword Grass, a fresh

This Dotted Rustic was caught at light at Lower Stoneybrek, Fair Isle,
by Pat Thomson. It is the first Shetland record for 50 years and is of the
southern form, not the black ab. suffusa which was apparently found on
Shetland in the past.

caught at Quendale.
A Crescent and an ear sp. (probably Saltern Ear)
were in the Norwick trap.

In the Fetlar trap there was a Saltern Ear
and a worn moth which has now been confirmed as Scarce Brindle, the third
for Shetland and about the 13th for Britain.
There were 2 Crescents and a Setaceous Hebrew Character in the
Norwick trap.

Malcolm Watson reports a Four-spotted Chaser dragonfly at Sullom Voe
Terminal, only the third Shetland record following singles on Fair Isle in July
1958 and Noss in June 1998.

There are Peacock butterflies at Eswick
and at Houster, Tingwall.
There were 2 Scarce Silver Ys at Eswick and a worn moth which is
probably a Flounced Rustic (there are only two previous Shetland
records).
On Fetlar, there was another Flounced Rustic, a Crescent and a
Bedstraw Hawkmoth.
A Scarce Silver Y was at Ocraquoy and there were 2 Bedstraw Hawkmoths
at Virkie. A Mouse Moth was on Foula.

There are Peacock butterflies at Gutcher on Yell,
Burrafirth on Unst and Bealans on Fetlar.
On Foula, a Straw Dot was an addition to the Shetland list, while
other migrants included a Setaceous Hebrew Character, a Nutmeg, a
Convolvulus Hawkmoth (found at honeysuckle at dusk) and a Crescent.

at Eswick there were 2 Heralds, a Great Brocade and 2 Crescents
and the traps contained a Blood Vein, 3 Great Brocades, 3
Nutmegs, 2 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, a Scarce Silver Y, 4
Agriphila tristellas, 4 Mother of Pearls and a
Bird-cherry Ermine.
A Crescent and a Setaceous Hebrew Character were caught at
Virkie. A Blood Vein and a Bird-cherry Ermine were at Mid Walls
and there were 2 Scarce Silver Ys at Voehead, Bressay.
On Unst, there were Nutmegs at Baltasound, Norwick and
Burrafirth, Crescents at Norwick and Baltasound, a Bird-cherry Ermine
at Norwick, a Setaceous Hebrew Character at Baltasound and a pyralid at
Baltasound which was confirmed as Platytes alpinella, the second
for Shetland.
Also in the Unst traps was a Sphaerophoria
hoverfly, presumably S. scripta although this can not be confirmed as it
a female. Bizarrely, there were also 2 crustaceans (either Amphipods or Isopods)
- prove positive that good trap nights don't just bring things in from long
distance.

A Peacock butterfly and a ladybird were on
Whalsay and another Peacock was at Haroldswick on Unst. There was a
Painted Lady and 10 Silver Ys on Mousa. A Small Tortoiseshell
is on Fetlar.
At Eswick,
there were 75 Silver Ys at Buddleia along with a Mother of
Pearl and a Great Brocade, while a
Twenty-plumed Moth
(Shetland's third) was found nearby. There was an Angle Shades and 4
Crescents on sugar.
In the traps
there was a Blood Vein, a Crescent, a Lesser Broad-bordered
Yellow Underwing, a Nutmeg, an Aethes smeathmanniana, 3
Agriphila tristella, a Mother of Pearl and a
Numonia suavella (second record).
Elsewhere, there was an Agriphila selalsella at Baltasound (third for Shetland), an Agriphila
tristella was at Norwick and a Nutmeg was at Burrafirth. An
Ear sp. was at East Ham, Bressay. A Blood Vein was at Sandwick along
with Shetland's third record of Epiblema foenella. A new
Pearly Underwing was on Foula.

A Peacock, 3 Painted Ladies and several
Silver Ys were at Eswick in the afternoon. Further Peacocks were at Laxfirth, North Nesting
and Colvadale, Unst.
Sugar at Eswick produced 3 Crescents
and about 500 Silver Ys were at the buddleias, while the Eswick traps
held 2 Bedstraw Hawkmoths, an Agriphila tristella and a
Crescent. A Convolvulus Hawkmoth was caught at Voehead, Bressay.

Crescent was at Norwick.
On Foula, there was a Nutmeg on sugar and a
Pearly Underwing at actinic light.

A new Scarce Silver Y was trapped at Toft and a Great Brocade
was at Virkie. A Burnished Brass and a Common Rustic sp. were
caught on Foula.

Great Brocade at Billister, North Nesting, Great Brocades at Ocraquoy
and Virkie, and a Great Brocade and a
Scarce Silver Y at Toft. A Great Brocade, a Smokey Wainscot
and an Ear sp. were caught on Foula.

A Great Brocade was in the Burrafirth trap and a new Scarce Silver
Y was at Norwick. Another Great Brocade was at Walls. Another
Burnished Brass was caught on Foula.

A good night. Single Green Arches at Eswick and
Burrafirth are the first for Shetland. There were also 6 Great Brocades
at Eswick, 2 Great Brocades and a Bright-line Brown-eye at
East Ham, Bressay, a Great Brocade on Foula, and a Great Brocade, a Suspected and a
Scarce Silver Y at Norwick. A Convolvulus Hawkmoth was found
during the day at Tingwall.

There were 4 Great Brocades in the trap at East Ham,
Bressay, along with a Gold Spot and a Common Rustic sp.
Another Great Brocade was in the traps at Eswick.
Larvae of the hoverfly Xanthandrus comtus,
only known as a rare migrant in one year previously, have been bred at
Eswick.

A Death's Head Hawkmoth was found dead at Sella Ness, near Sullom Voe
Terminal.
Two Bedstraw Hawkmoths were caught at honeysuckle on Foula.

In other traps, there was an Angle Shades and a Crescent at
Eswick, 2 Crescents, 14 Dotted Clays and 104 True Lover's Knots
at Lea Gardens, Tresta, and 2 Gold Spots at Norwick.
On Foula, the trap contained 2 Burnished Brass, a Rosy Rustic,
a Smoky Wainscot and a Flame Shoulder.

Another Burnished Brass has been caught, this time on Foula, along
with 2 Haworth's Minors, a Confused, a Northern Rustic and
2 Acleris aspersana.
On Unst, a Gold Spot was in the trap at Baltasound, along with the
migrant hoverfly Meliscaeva auricollis, while the first
Beautiful Golden Y for the trap at Burrafirth was joined by an Exile.

A Burnished Brass has been caught at light at Virkie. It is the first
recorded north of Fair Isle, but its appearance is, perhaps, not surprising as
it is spreading northwards and has only colonised Orkney recently.

Martin Holmes reports a Flame Shoulder found while mowing grass at
Westerloch, Lerwick - this common British species is very scarce in Shetland and
only known to breed on Foula.

The red dragonfly has reappeared in Tony and Beth Gerrard's garden at
Sandgarth, north of Voe and it is
a male Large
Red Damselfly Pyrrhosoma nymphula. This species is widespread in
Britain and is found as far north as Orkney, but it is not usually thought of as
a migrant.

This Small Heath Bumblebee Bombus jonellus vogti was one of
about 12 seen along the Burn of Lunklet, Aith.

A red dragonfly was seen over a small pond at Sandgarth, north of Voe.
It was most likely to be one of the darters (Sympetrum) which are all
strong migrants, but none are on the Shetland list, although a red dragonfly was
seen briefly over Loch of Spiggie about 10 years ago and another was seen on
Fair Isle in August 1981.
A Dark Brocade and a Silver-ground Carpet were recorded on
Foula.

On Foula, moths in the trap included a
Ghost Moth, 4 Flame Shoulders, 15 Map-winged Swifts and a
Garden Carpet.

Terry Rogers saw a Broad-bordered White Underwing on Collafirth Hill,
flushed from the side of the largest pool near the summit. It was seen very
closely as it settled but not caught and it is only the second record of this
species in at least 40 years, the last being one photographed at North Roe in
1992.
A Wood Tiger was also seen on Muckle Roe.
Butterflies included 3 Painted Ladies at Baltasound and
singles at Burravoe, Yell, and Eshaness.

along the Bressay shore of Noss Sound, 7 Red Admirals
at Ocraquoy and several reports of smaller numbers.

There were 5 Red Admirals and 2 Painted Ladies at Eswick, 3
Red Admirals at Gott, several Red Admirals at Sandgarth, north of
Voe, and buckets of rain on Unst.
There were 2 Silver Ys and a Marbled Coronet in the trap at
Ocraquoy.

During the day at Eswick, there were 2 Red
Admirals, several Diamondback Moths and 3 Episyrphus balteatus,
plus a Green Lacewing. Another 2 Red Admirals and another Green
Lacewing were seen nearby at Skellister Ness.
A Painted Lady was seen in Lerwick.
On sugar at Eswick there were 12 Angle Shades,
2 Dark Sword Grasses, a Setaceous Hebrew Character and a Dark
Brocade. There was a large number of moths around at dusk including 30
Silver Ys, 40 Angle Shades and 2 Currant Pugs. The traps
painted a different picture with only 27 moths - a Silver Y, 2 Angle
Shades and 2 Dark Sword Grasses (one different), the remainder
residents.

Whites and the migrant hoverfly Episyrphus balteatus at the

Only 23 moths in the Eswick traps but these
included a Dark Sword Grass, 2 Angle Shades and the first
Blood-vein for Shetland since 1996.

corollae and 3 Syrphus sp.

A good night. In 4 traps at Eswick there were 2
Angle Shades, a Bright-line Brown-eye
and a Common Wainscot (the latter two both scarce migrants in Shetland),
along with 2 Dark Brocades, 9 Garden Carpets, 5 Lychnis,
a Satyr Pug, 2 Silver Ys, 43 Shears, a Map-winged Swift
and a Clouded-bordered Brindle.
On Unst, one trap at Baltasound caught a Setaceous Hebrew
Character (another scarce migrant), 17 Shears, 7 Map-winged Swifts,
5 Marbled Coronets, 3 Garden Carpets, a Lychnis and a
Dark Brocade.
On Foula, a Flame Shoulder was caught at light -
curiously, this species is more or less restricted to Foula in Shetland
(although there have been a few record on Mainland).

A Large White was in a garden at Baltasound for a
second successive day.
An Angle Shades has emerged from a pupa produced by a
caterpillar found at Boddam in March.

On Muckle Roe, during the day, Terry Rogers found 25 Satyr
Pugs, about 200 Neofaculta ericitella, 200 Clepsis
senecionana, 100 Syndemis musculana and a few
Ancylis unguicella, Clepsis senecionana and Crambus
lathoniellus, while two small micros appear to be a species of
Incurvaria, which would be new to Shetland.

A White-tailed Bumblebee in the nurse's cottage garden at Ham, Foula,
is exceptionally early.

A Red Sword Grass was recorded at actinic light on Foula, along with a
Brindled Ochre.

On Foula, moths recorded were single Agonopterix cilliella and
Endrosis sarcitrella and 2 Brindled Ochres.

Characters at light at Ocraquoy.

Two Angle Shades were found on Unst - one by Arthur Spence in his
garden in Uyeasound and another found by Davie Leask in a water-butt, but
still alive, at Baltasound .

millipede - David Scott-Langley
This millipede apparently arrived in Shetland in a consignment
of mushrooms last autumn as it found in a mushroom by Catrina Carter of the
Shetland Amenity Trust. She passed it to Paul Harvey, who sent to to David
Scott-Langley, who sent it to Henrik Enghoff
of Denmark who identified it as Ommatoiulus rutilans. This
species is very common in Spain, but also occurs elsewhere in Western Europe and
as far north as the southern Netherlands. It is has not apparently been recorded
from Britain before.
David Scott-Langley also reports that a batch of flies he
trapped on Foula in July 2002 include a very,
very tiny short-winged fly which appears to be a species
of Philygria
which may be new to science.
