Friday 30th September 2005

The Lesser Yellowlegs is still on Out Skerries and a Little Bunting is there.

The American Coot is at Loch of Benston.

A Buff-breasted Sandpiper was seen flying off from Papil Water, West Burra.

The Greenish Warbler is still at Wester Quarff along with a Yellow-browed Warbler and a Common Rosefinch. There are also 2 Yellow-browed Warblers at Maywick and singles at Sumburgh Head, Quendale, Bigton, Hoswick and Sandwick.

On Whalsay there are 7 Yellow-browed Warblers, 3 Common Rosefinches, a Red-breasted Flycatcher, a Tree Pipit, a Bar-tailed Godwit and a Scaup.

On Unst there are 4 Yellow-browed Warblers at Baltasound, 2 at Norwick and singles at Northdale and Skaw.

On Foula the American Golden Plover, the Richard’s Pipit, the Red-backed Shrike and 2 Little Buntings were still present while a Short-eared Owl, a Common Whitethroat and a Common Rosefinch were new and the Common Redpolls had gone up to 4. There were also 4 Whooper Swans, 27 Pink-footed Geese, 20 Greylag Geese, 12 Barnacle Geese, 5 Wigeons, a Merlin, 30+ Lapwings, 2 Purple Sandpipers, 13 Dunlins, 3 Jack Snipes, 11 Curlews, 5 Common Gulls, an alba Wagtail, a White Wagtail, a Robin, c 50 Wheatears, a Whinchat, 4 Redwings, a Chiffchaff, 2 Goldcrests, a Chaffinch, 5 Snow Buntings, 21 Lapland Buntings and the Reed Bunting.

There is a Bobolink on Foula, at Ham. It is the fifth for Shetland following two records on Out Skerries and singles on Fair Isle and in south Mainland. In addition, there is the American Golden Plover, a Red-backed Shrike, 2 Little Buntings, 2 Grey Herons, 3 Whooper Swans, 26 Pink-footed Geese, 28 Greylag Geese, 10 Mallards, 18 Teals, 2 Wigeons, a Merlin, 2 Water Rails, c200 Golden Plovers, 12 Dunlins, a Ruff, 6 Jack Snipes, a Wood Pigeon, 2 White Wagtails, 2 Robins, c 25 Wheatears, a Whinchat, a Song Thrush, a Redwing, a Reed Warbler, a Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 7 Snow Buntings and 11 Lapland Buntings.

A juvenile Pallid Harrier flew south past Sumburgh Head in the morning but was not seen again. There are 3 Bar-tailed Godwits and a Whimbrel at Pool of Virkie.

The Lesser Yellowlegs is still on Out Skerries. Also there are 3 Grey Herons, 27 Greylag Geese, a Sparrowhawk, 4 Whinchats, a Blackcap, 4 Chaffinches, 33 Twites and 4 Lapland Buntings.

The Greenish Warbler is still at Wester Quarff along with 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers and a Barred Warbler. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE GARDEN AND RESPECT THE PRIVACY OF ALL HOUSEHOLDERS.

There are 2 Yellow-browed Warblers each at Skaw, Norwick and Baltasound and a Barred Warbler at Haroldswick.

A Red-breasted Flycatcher is at Gutcher on Yell.

There are also Yellow-browed Warblers at South Collafirth, Busta and Scalloway.

Several Pink-footed Geese included 13 at three sites on Unst and 13 at Benston.


Wednesday 28th September 2005

Shore Lark and Little Bunting on Foula - Russell Wynn; Lesser Yellowlegs on Out Skerries - Steve Minton

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston.

On Out Skerries, the Lesser Yellowlegs was still present and there were also 3 Grey Herons, a Sparrowhawk, 3 Robins, 4 Whinchats, 3 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, a Yellow-browed Warbler, 6 Chaffinches and 3 Snow Buntings.

The Greenish Warbler is still at Wester Quarff along with a Red-breasted Flycatcher, a Yellow-browed Warbler, 2 Common Rosefinches and a Barred Warbler. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE GARDEN.

On Foula there was a Grey Heron, 9 Whooper Swans, 12 Greylag Geese, 10 Mallards, 18 Teals, 3 Wigeons, a Scaup, 202 Eiders, 2 Merlins, a Sparrowhawk, 4 White Wagtails, 20+ Wheatears, 2 Common Redstarts, a Song Thrush, 2 Redwings, a Reed Warbler, a Blackcap, a Yellow-browed Warbler, a Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 2 Chaffinches, 2 Common Redpolls, 20 Snow Buntings, 35 Lapland Buntings, a Little Bunting and a Reed Bunting.

There are 4 Yellow-browed Warblers at Scalloway, and a Yellow-browed Warbler and 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers are at Tresta. Another Red-breasted Flycatcher is at Kergord.

An Arctic Skua was at Ulsta.

A Yellow-browed Warbler and a Barred Warbler are at Norwick.


Tuesday 27th September 2005

Lesser Yellowlegs on Out Skerries (3 photos) - Michael McKee; Greenish Warbler (3 photos), Bluethroat and red-breasted Flycatcher at Quarff - Hugh Harrop; Eastern Yellow Wagtail - Garry Taylor

A Lesser Yellowlegs is on Out Skerries. It is the ninth Shetland record and the first since 1999. Also present were 3 Grey Herons, a Sparrowhawk, a Whimbrel,  a Collared Dove, 2 Robins, 3 Whinchats, 12 Wheatears, a Song Thrush, 4 Blackcaps, a Garden Warbler, a Yellow-browed Warbler, 4 Chaffinches, a Brambling and 24 Snow Buntings.

The Greenish Warbler is still at Wester Quarff along with a Little Bunting, 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers, 3 Yellow-browed Warblers, 2 Common Rosefinches and a Bluethroat. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THE GARDEN. The two male King Eiders are still in Clift Sound.

A Buff-breasted Sandpiper is with Golden Plovers at Fleck in south Mainland.

On Foula there was a Yellow-breasted Bunting, 2 Little Buntings, a Red-breasted Flycatcher and the American Golden Plover as well as a Grey Heron, 2 Whooper Swans, 30 Pink-footed Geese, 28 Greylag Geese, a Sparrowhawk, a Moorhen, 230 Golden Plovers, 10 Ringed Plovers, 20 Dunlins, 5 Purple Sandpipers, 2 Knots, a Ruff, 5 Jack Snipe, the Shore Lark, 4 White Wagtails, 30+ Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, a Common Redstart, a Song Thrush, a Redwing, a Reed Warbler, 2 Blackcaps, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 2 Willow Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Goldcrests, 2 Chaffinches, a Brambling, 2 Common Redpolls, 6 Snow Buntings, 12 Lapland Buntings and a Reed Bunting.

On Unst, there are 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Barred Warbler at Baltasound, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Reed Warbler at Norwick and a Yellow-browed Warbler at Skaw.

An Eastern Yellow Wagtail and a Greenland Redpoll are on Fetlar.


 

Monday 26th September 2005

Red-breasted Flycatcher at Wester Quarff - Steve Minton; Shore Lark on Foula - Russell Wynn

A Greenish Warbler is at Wester Quarff, along with 2 Common Rosefinches, 2 Barred Warblers, 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers and 7 Yellow-browed Warblers, with another Yellow-browed Warbler at Easter Quarff. At least one King Eider is still offshore in Clift Sound.

On Unst, a Bluethroat is at Uyeasound, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers and a Reed Warbler are at Burrafirth and a further 2 Yellow-browed Warblers are at Norwick with another at Skaw.

On Out Skerries there was a Sparrowhawk, a Collared Dove, 8 Blackcaps, a Garden Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 2 Goldcrests, a Chaffinch and 7 Snow Buntings.

On Foula there were 55 Pink-footed Geese, 60 Greylag Geese, a Sparrowhawk, 3 Merlins, 25 Wheatears, a Whinchat, a Song Thrush, 3 Redwings, a Reed Warbler, 6 Blackcaps, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs, 3 Common Redpolls, 6 Snow Buntings, 5 Lapland Buntings and the Little Bunting.

 


Sunday 25th September 2005

Pechora Pipit at Scatness - Steve Minton; Yellow-browed Warbler at Quarff - Hugh Harrop; Little Bunting on Foula - Russell Wynn

A Pechora Pipit is at Scatness. A Whimbrel is also at Scatness along with 43 Pink-footed Geese, a Hawfinch is at Toab and a Wryneck is at Geosetter. A Red-breasted Flycatcher and 2 Yellow-browed Warblers are at Maywick.

A Little Bunting is on Trondra. There are 2 Red-breasted Flycatchers, 2 Common Rosefinches, a Barred Warbler and 3 Yellow-browed Warblers at Wester Quarff. The 2 King Eiders are still offshore in Clift Sound.

On Unst, there is a Shore Lark on Hermaness, a Little Bunting at Uyeasound, Barred Warblers at Baltasound and Haroldswick and a Yellow-browed Warbler at Northdale with 2 at Baltasound and 2 at Norwick.

On Foula there was a Richard’s Pipit, a Little Bunting, 6 Yellow-browed Warblers, the Shore Lark and the American Golden Plover as well as a Grey Heron, c 80 Pink-footed Geese, c 100 Greylag Geese, 3 Mallards, 9 Teals, 3 Wigeons, 225 Eiders, a Sparrowhawk, 65+ Golden Plovers, 10 Ringed Plovers, 24 Lapwings, 2 Purple Sandpipers, 8 Dunlins, a Sanderling, a Knot, 2 alba Wagtails, 2 White Wagtails, the Robin, c 50 Wheatears, 2 Whinchats, 2 Song Thrushes, a Redwing, 2 Reed Warblers, a Barred Warbler, 8 Blackcaps, a Willow Warbler, 3 Chiffchaffs (2 of which were arrivals), 2 Chaffinches, 30 Twites, 22 Snow Buntings and 12 Lapland Buntings.

 

On Out Skerries there were 5 Grey Herons, a Jack Snipe, a Whimbrel, a Common Sandpiper, a Wood Pigeon, a Collared Dove, a Bluethroat, a Common Redstart, a Whinchat, 5 Blackcaps, 2 Garden Warblers, a Willow Warbler, 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, 4 Goldcrests, a Brambling, a Common Redpoll and 16 Snow Buntings.


Saturday 24th September 2005

American Coot at Loch of Benston - (2 photos) Paul Sclater; (3 photos) Hugh Harrop; (2 photos) Dougie Preston; American Golden Plover on Foula - Russell Wynn; Bee-eater at Helendale - Steve Minton

The American Coot has returned to Loch of Benston.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. A Yellow-browed Warbler is at Kergord. A flock of 31 Pink-footed Geese flew over Voe.

The 2 King Eiders are still at Wester Quarff and a Barred Warbler and a Yellow-browed Warbler are there. Another Yellow-browed Warbler, a Barred Warbler and a Lapland Bunting are at Sumburgh Farm.

A Yellow-browed Warbler, a Little Bunting, 2 Barred Warblers, and an Eastern Yellow Wagtail are on Fetlar.

A Yellow-browed Warbler is at Baltasound and a Barred Warbler is at Northdale on Unst.

On Foula there was a Citrine Wagtail (seen briefly), a Shore Lark and the American Golden Plover was seen again. There was also a Grey Heron, 7 Whooper Swans (a family with 4 juveniles plus the long-staying individual), c 50 Pink-footed Geese, 4 Greylag Geese, 4 Mallards, 11 Teals, a Wigeon, 3 Oystercatchers, c 150 Golden Plovers, 17 Ringed Plovers, 28 Lapwings, 11 Dunlins, a Knot, a Ruff, well over 100 Snipes, a Jack Snipe, 2 alba Wagtails, 2 White Wagtails, a Robin, c 40 Wheatears, a Whinchat, a Song Thrush, a Reed Warbler, a Barred Warbler, a Garden Warbler, 6 Blackcaps, a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, 2 Common Redpolls, c 35 Twites, c25 Snow Buntings and 10+ Lapland Buntings.


Friday 23rd September 2005

Unfortunately, the Veery was killed by a cat overnight.

A Catharus thrush was seen briefly by one observer at Lamba Ness, Unst but was not relocated. A Lapland Bunting was there, a Peregrine Falcon and a Grey Wagtail are at Haroldswick and the juvenile Hobby was at Baltasound.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

A Pomarine Skua was seen chasing a Kittiwake at Mavis Grind.

On Foula there were 500+ Pink-footed Geese, a Greylag Goose, 11 Teals, 26 Lapwings, 6 Dunlins, 2 Knots, a Ruff, 12 Black-headed Gulls, 300+ Meadow Pipits (in north half of the island), 2 alba Wagtails, the Robin, c 25 Wheatears, a Whinchat, a Reed Warbler, 3 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, a Common Redpoll, c 30 Twites and 2 Lapland Buntings.


Thursday 22nd September 2005

Veery at Northdale (3 photos) - Mike Pennington; (2 photos) - Micky Maher

A Veery was trapped at Northdale, Unst, at dusk. It is only the seventh for Britain and the first for Shetland. The Barred Warbler is still at Norwick.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. The male Scaup is still on Loch of Clickimin and 50 Pink-footed Geese flew south there.

The 2 male King Eiders are still at Wester Quarff and 17 Pink-footed Geese flew south there. There are 2 Black-tailed Godwits at Scatness and 56 Pink-footed Geese flew south, while 400 Golden Plovers are at Spiggie.

A Garden Warbler is at Sandgarth, Voe. A Kestrel is still at South Collafirth, Northmavine.

On Foula the American Golden Plover was seen again among the Golden Plover flock of at least 150 birds. There were also c 550 Pink-footed Geese, 18 Greylag Geese, 15 Ringed Plovers, 6 Dunlins, a Sanderling, a Knot, 2 Ruffs, 6 Common Gulls, a Robin, 10 Wheatears, a Whinchat, a Reed Warbler, a Barred Warbler, a ringed Willow Warbler, a ringed Chiffchaff, 2 Common Rosefinches and a Snow Bunting.

 


Wednesday 21st September 2005

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

About 315 Pink-footed Geese in 7 flocks flew south over Dunrossness during the day. There are 37 Black-tailed Godwits at Pool of Virkie and another 8 at Scatness.

A Barred Warbler is at Norwick, a Hobby is at Haroldswick and a Ruff and the Black-tailed Godwit are at Baltasound.

On Foula there were c50 Pink-footed Geese, c 150 Golden Plovers, 2 Ruffs, a Goldcrest and a Lapland Bunting.


Tuesday 20th September 2005

Lapland Bunting at Garths Ness - Jim Nicolson; Ruff, Bar-tailed Godwit and Ruff, Bar-tailed Godwit and Black-tailed Godwit (2 photos) - Mike Pennington

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. The Lapland Bunting is still at Garths Ness, Quendale. A Robin is at Sandgarth, Voe.

There are 3 Ruffs along with the Black-tailed Godwit and the Bar-tailed Godwit at Baltasound.

On Foula there were 4 Wigeons, a Pink-footed Goose, c150 Golden Plovers, 4 Dunlins, 2 Sanderlings, a s, a Green Sandpiper, a Ruff, a Willow Warbler and a Lapland Bunting.


Monday 19th September 2005

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

There are Lapland Buntings at Garths Ness and Sumburgh.

The Bar-tailed Godwit and a Ruff are at Baltasound.


Sunday 18th September 2005

Lapland Bunting at Garths Ness - Hugh Harrop

A Grey Phalarope was at Brough pier, Fetlar, at lunch-time before flying north.

The two male King Eiders were together off Wester Quarff.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale, along with a Robin.

The Lapland Bunting is still at Garths Ness, Quendale, and the presumed Marsh Warbler is still at Quendale Mill. There are 3 Grey Plovers at Pool of Virkie.

On Foula there are 2 Red-throated Divers (an adult and juv), a Grey Heron, the Whooper Swan (still here from the spring), a Pink-footed Goose, 2 Wigeons, 11 Mallards, a Purple Sandpiper, 3 Sanderlings, a Knot, 4 Razorbills, a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, the Pied Flycatcher (from a few days ago), a Common Rosefinch, c 25 Twites and 6 Snow Buntings.


Saturday 17th September 2005

The Yellow Warbler was still at Garths Ness, Quendale, in the morning, along with the Lapland Bunting.

On Unst, there are 4 Black-tailed Godwits and a Blackcap at Skaw, a Bar-tailed Godwit at Baltasound and a Snow Bunting and a Ruff at Uyeasound.


Friday 16th September 2005

presumed Marsh Warbler at Quendale and Yellow Warbler - Jim Nicolson; presumed Marsh Warbler at Quendale - Hugh Harrop; Lapland Bunting at Garths Ness - Steve Minton

The Yellow Warbler is still at Garths Ness, Quendale, and a presumed Marsh Warbler is at Quendale Mill; this intriguing bird was initially thought to be a Blyth's Reed. A Lapland Bunting is at Garths Ness.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

There are 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Ruffs and a Bar-tailed Godwit at Baltasound, while the Red-breasted Flycatcher is still at Halligarth.

On Foula, the American Golden Plover has joined the other Golden Plover flock of about 60 birds. The 2 Knots, the 2 Ruffs and the Sanderling were still present as were 2 Chiffchaffs (both thought to be moulting adults) and the 2 Common Rosefinches.

A Yellow Warbler is at Garths Ness, Quendale. It is the second for Shetland, following one in Lerwick in November 1990, and just the fifth for Britain, although the fourth for Scotland.

On Foula, there was an American Golden Plover as well as a Cormorant, 40+ Golden Plovers, c10 Ringed Plovers, 12 Dunlins, a Sanderling, 2 Knots, 2 Ruffs, a Short-eared Owl, a White Wagtail, the Redwing, a Blackcap, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, 2 Common Rosefinches and a Lapland Bunting.

The Buff-breasted Sandpiper was still at Scatness in the morning.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. A Wryneck is at Wester Quarff.

There are 4 Black-tailed Godwits, 4 Curlew Sandpipers and 3 Grey Plovers at Eshaness.

Four  Black-tailed Godwits, a Common Rosefinch and a Barred Warbler are at Haroldswick and the Red-breasted Flycatcher and the Black-tailed Godwit are still at Baltasound.


Wednesday 14th September 2005

A Buff-breasted Sandpiper and a Black-tailed Godwit are at Scatness. A Grey Plover, 11 Knots and 14 Bar-tailed Godwits are at Pool of Virkie and 6 House Martins and 20 Swallows area at Loch of Spiggie. A Pomarine Skua was in West Voe of Sumburgh in the morning.

The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. The King Eider is still at Wester Quarff.

A Leach's Petrel flew past Eshaness in the morning.

A Red-breasted Flycatcher, the Black-tailed Godwit, a Bar-tailed Godwit and a Ruff are at Baltasound.

On Foula there was a Grey Heron, a Redwing, a Lesser Whitethroat and 2 Common Rosefinches.


Tuesday 13th September 2005

The Little Bunting is still at Aith on Fetlar.

There are 3 Grey Plovers at Pool of Virkie and a juvenile Black-tailed Godwit and a male Ruff are at Baltasound. Another Black-tailed Godwit is at Leon, near Ollaberry, and a Kestrel is at South Collafirth for a second day.


Monday 12th September 2005

A Hobby is at Quendale.

The King Eider is still at Wester Quarff and the Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

The Little Bunting is still at Aith, Fetlar, along with a Marsh Warbler, while a Wryneck is at Northdale on Fetlar.

On Foula there were 12 Dunlins, a Knot, 2 Ruffs, 3 White Wagtails, a Redwing, a Barred Warbler, a Common Whitethroat, a Lesser Whitethroat, 4 Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff, a Pied Flycatcher, 2 new Common Rosefinches and a Lapland Bunting.


Sunday 11th September 2005

Greenish Warbler at Sumburgh - Hugh Harrop; Little Bunting on Fetlar - Dougie Preston; Red Grouse at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson

An adult Greenish Warbler is at the Sumburgh Hotel.

A Yellow-browed Warbler is at Voxter and 2 Barred Warblers are at Dale of Walls.

The Rose-coloured Starling and a Barred Warbler are still on Out Skerries.

The Little Bunting is still on Fetlar.

On Foula there were 2 White Wagtails, a Whinchat, a Redwing, a Barred Warbler, a Blackcap, 5 Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff, a Pied Flycatcher, a Common Rosefinch and a Lapland Bunting.


Saturday 10th September 2005

Curlew Sandpiper at Scatness - Hugh Harrop; Golden Oriole at Mid Yell - Raymond Strachan

A Little Bunting is at Aith on Fetlar.

The Rose-coloured Starling is still on Out Skerries along with a Barred Warbler and a Pied Flycatcher. A juvenile Glaucous Gull is at Vidlin.

An adult male King Eider is beside the Burra bridge; it is not the Wester Quarff bird do is presumably the Burwick bird. A Common Rosefinch, an Icterine Warbler and 2 Goldcrests are at Wester Quarff. The Curlew Sandpiper is still at Scatness.

A Golden Oriole is at Mid Yell for a second day.

A Common Rosefinch and 2 Barred Warblers are at Baltasound and there are 10 Pink-footed Geese at Haroldswick.

On Foula there were 3 Grey Herons, 2 Ruffs, 2 Barred Warblers, 2 Garden Warblers, a Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Willow Warblers, 2 Pied Flycatchers and a Common Rosefinch.

 


Friday 9th September 2005

Rose-coloured Starling on Whalsay - Jon Dunn; Curlew Sandpiper at Scatness - Steve Minton

A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling trapped in a shed at Skaw, Whalsay, was released at Marrister.

A Barred Warbler is at Seafield in Lerwick. The juvenile Glaucous Gull is still at Burwick, Scalloway. The Bee-eater is still at Helendale. A Barred Warbler is at North Collafirth and a Pied Flycatcher is at South Collafirth.

A Barred Warbler, a Curlew Sandpiper, 11 Black-tailed Godwits and a Ruff area at Scatness.

A Short-eared Owl and a Ruff are at Uyeasound.

On Foula there was a Slavonian Grebe, a Kestrel, a Knot, 2 Ruffs, 6+ White Wagtails, a Redwing, a Reed Warbler, 2 Barred Warblers, a Garden Warbler, 3 Lesser Whitethroats, a Willow Warbler, a Chiffchaff, a Pied Flycatcher, a Red-backed Shrike, a Common Rosefinch and a Common Crossbill.


Thursday 8th September 2005

A Thrush Nightingale is at Brae.

The European Bee-eater is still at Helendale.

A Red-backed Shrike is at Ocraquoy. An orange-bellied harrier was seen at Maywick. There are 40 Swallows at Cunningsburgh.

A Corncrake was at Norwick in the morning and a Black-tailed Godwit is still at Haroldswick.

On Foula there was a Buff-breasted Sandpiper and a Wryneck as well as a Grey Heron, a Pink-footed Goose, 4 Teals, 10 Wigeons, 7 Oystercatchers, 12 Ringed Plovers, 2 Sanderlings, 3 Knots, c 12 White Wagtails, 2 Fieldfares, a Reed Warbler, 2 Barred Warblers, 2 Garden Warblers, a Blackcap, 2 Lesser Whitethroats, 2 Willow Warblers, a Chiffchaff, a Red-backed Shrike, a Common Rosefinch, a Common Crossbill and a Snow Bunting.

 


Wednesday 7th September 2005

A Common Rosefinch is at Ocraquoy.

 

On Foula observations were limited but there were 6 Greylag Geese, 3 Knots, 8+ White Wagtails, a Whinchat, the Redwing, the 2 Fieldfares, 2 Reed Warblers, a Sedge Warblers, 2 Garden Warblers, a Common Whitethroat, a Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Willow Warblers, a Pied Flycatcher, and a Common Rosefinch.

 


Tuesday 6th September 2005

Arctic Warbler on Bressay (2 photos) - Hugh Harrop; Sanderling at Norwick - Mike Pennington

A Thrush Nightingale was at Norwick at lunch-time but not later; there are now 19 Pink-footed Geese there.

A dark morph Honey Buzzard was seen flying south over Firth.

The Arctic Warbler is still at Gorie, Bressay, with a Greenshank also there.

An adult Grey Phalarope was seen between Fair Isle and Sumburgh.

On Foula the Lanceolated Warbler was seen briefly again today but there was no sign of the Thrush Nightingale. Also present was a Slavonian Grebe, a Grey Heron, 8 Teals, 6 Wigeons, 12 Mallards, c 50 Golden Plovers, 23 Ringed Plovers, 20 Dunlins, 2 Knots, a Black-tailed Godwit, a Short-eared Owl, 2 (possibly 3) Common Swifts, a Swallow, 6+ White Wagtails, 2 Whinchats, a Redwing (the ringed bird from July), 2 Fieldfares, 5 Reed Warblers, 2 Barred Warblers, 7 Garden Warblers, a Blackcap, 2 Common Whitethroats, a Lesser Whitethroat, 8 Willow Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Pied Flycatchers, a Red-backed Shrike and a Brambling.

 


Monday 5th September 2005

Lanceolated Warbler on Foula - Tony Mainwood; Greenish Warbler at Quendale (3 photos) - Hugh Harrop; Arctic Warbler on Bressay (3 photos) - Dougie Preston; Pink-footed Geese at Norwick - Mike Pennington

A Lanceolated Warbler has been trapped in the Nurse's cottage garden on Foula and the Thrush Nightingale is still there but elusive. There was also a Cormorant, a Grey Heron, 3 Teals, c 50 Golden Plovers, 18 Ringed Plovers, c 20 Dunlins, a Knot, a Short-eared Owl, a Swallow, c 20 White Wagtails, the Fieldfare, 2 Reed Warblers, 2 Barred Warblers, a female Blackcap, a Garden Warbler, a Lesser Whitethroat, 7 Willow Warblers, 2 Chiffchaffs and a Pied Flycatcher.

A new Greenish Warbler is at Quendale Mill. A Wood Warbler is also there, 2 Sparrowhawks are at Hillwell, a Barred Warbler is at Grutness,  a Greenshank is at Huesbreck, and a Common Swift is at Sandwick

The Greenish Warbler is still on Noss and the Arctic Warbler is still at Gorie, Bressay.

A European Bee-eater at Helendale is presumably the bird from Virkie. An Icterine Warbler is nearby at Seafield.

A juvenile Glaucous Gull at Burwick, near Scalloway, is presumably the bird from Wester Quarff.

The Red-backed Shrike is still at Haroldswick and the Barred Warbler is still at Norwick, along with an early flock of 12 Pink-footed Geese.

There are 3 Barred Warblers and a Grasshopper Warbler on Fetlar.


Sunday 4th September 2005

A Honey Buzzard was at Busta, near Brae, in the afternoon, 4 Black-tailed Godwits are at Gluss and a Common Whitethroat is at Oxensetter, North Mainland.

The Greenish Warbler is still on Noss.

On Foula the Arctic Warbler was still present and a Nightingale sp. seen briefly was thought to be possibly a Thrush Nightingale but was not confirmed. There were also 17 Dunlins, a Swallow, 6 White Wagtails, a Whinchat, a Fieldfare, a Reed Warbler, 5 Barred Warblers, 6 Garden Warblers and 3 Willow Warblers.

The Rose-coloured Starling is still on Out Skerries along with 4 Barred Warblers, a Wryneck, a Common Rosefinch, the Yellow Wagtail, a Pied Flycatcher and a Whinchat.

A Common Rosefinch is at Wester Quarff along with the juvenile Glaucous Gull, 5 Pied Flycatchers, 2 Wood Warblers, a Common Crossbill, a Common Whitethroat, a Spotted Flycatcher and a male Goosander, while the King Eider is still offshore with 376 Common Eiders. A Red-backed Shrike, a Barred Warbler and a Pied Flycatcher are at Ocraquoy.

There are 27 Black-tailed Godwits, a Greenshank and 2 House Martins at Brig of Bakkasetter. At Pool of Virkie there are 232 Redshanks, 234 Curlews, 12 Bar-tailed Godwits, 10 Black-tailed Godwits, 199 Dunlins, 24 Sanderlings and 232 Ringed Plovers. The Marsh Warbler and the Reed Warbler are still at Quendale.

A Common Rosefinch is at Haroldswick along with the Red-backed Shrike while there are Reed Warblers at Baltasound and Haroldswick and a Short-eared Owl at Haroldswick.

A Yellow Wagtail and a Tree Pipit are on Fetlar.

A harrier sp. was seen on East Burra flying south.


Saturday 3rd September 2005

Juvenile Black-tailed Godwit at Haroldswick - Mike Pennington; Rose-coloured Starling, Pied Flycatcher and 2 Barred Warblers on Out Skerries - Steve Minton

On Foula there was an Arctic Warbler (trapped) as well as 40 Lapwings, a Sand Martin, a Swallow, 5 White Wagtails, a Fieldfare, 2 new Barred Warblers, 2 Garden Warblers, a Willow Warbler and a Pied Flycatcher.

An unidentified orange-bellied harrier was seen flying south at Levenwick in the afternoon.

The Booted Warbler is still at East Voe of Quarff and the King Eider is still off Wester Quarff, with a very early juvenile Glaucous Gull there. At Quendale there is a Marsh Warbler, a Reed Warbler, a Green Sandpiper, a Sparrowhawk, a Kestrel and a Wryneck.

On Out Skerries the Rose-coloured Starling is still present along with 5 Barred Warblers, a Common Rosefinch, 2 Pied Flycatchers, a Fieldfare, a Yellow Wagtail, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whinchat and a Wryneck.

The Red-backed Shrike is still at Haroldswick, along with a Black-tailed Godwit, and the Barred Warbler is still at Norwick.

An Icterine Warbler, 2 Barred Warblers, a Wryneck, 8 Black-tailed Godwits and 2 Reed Warblers are on Fetlar.

A Blackcap and a family of Swallows are at Sandgarth, Voe.


Friday 2nd September 2005

Honey Buzzard at Compass Head - Hugh Harrop; Arctic Warbler at Skaw, Unst - Mike Pennington

A Booted Warbler was at Gungstie on Noss in the morning and the Greenish Warbler is still on Noss along with a Red-breasted Flycatcher and a Reed Warbler.

An Arctic Warbler is at Gorie, Bressay, along with a Barred Warbler, and another Barred Warbler is at Gardie, Bressay.

A Booted Warbler was found at Casho, East Voe of Quarff, in the evening and a Stonechat and a Wood Warbler are at Wester Quarff.

Another Arctic Warbler is at Skaw, Unst, while a Barred Warbler is at Norwick and a Red-backed Shrike is at Haroldswick.

A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling is on Out Skerries along with 4 Barred Warblers, a Common Rosefinch, a Wryneck, a Reed Warbler, a Pied Flycatcher, a Wood Warbler and 4 Whinchats.

A Honey Buzzard seen flying over Boddam was later seen over Compass Head before heading off towards Fair Isle at 14:00. A Little Stint and 7 Knots are at Scatness, 2 Curlew Sandpipers are at Pool of Virkie and a Black-tailed Godwit is at Hillwell.

A Barred Warbler and a Pied Flycatcher are at Eswick.

On Foula coverage was far from complete but there were 7 Garden Warblers, 4 Willow Warblers, a Reed Warbler and a new Barred Warbler.


Thursday 1st September 2005

The Greenish Warbler is still on Noss, along with 8 Willow Warblers, 3 Pied Flycatchers, a Common Whitethroat, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Garden Warbler, a Whinchat, 100+ Meadow Pipits, 15 Sanderlings, 3 Purple Sandpipers and a Common Sandpiper.

A Common Rosefinch is at Gorie, Bressay.

The Bee-eater is still at Virkie, 4 Curlew Sandpipers, 19 Ruffs and 7 Knots are at Pool of Virkie and a Wryneck and a Fieldfare are at Maywick. A Pied Flycatcher is at Sumburgh Head. There are 20 Swallows at Cunningsburgh and 16 at Sandwick.

On Unst, there is an adult Hobby at Baltasound, a Wood Warbler, 10 Knots and 13 Sanderlings at Norwick, a Common Redstart and a Pied Flycatcher at Northdale, and 2 Black-tailed Godwits, a Reed Warbler and 6 very early Bramblings at Haroldswick.

A Robin and a Fieldfare are on Fetlar.

On Foula, there were 20+ Dunlins, 4 Sanderlings, 12 Common Gulls, c15 White Wagtails, a Whinchat, the Barred Warbler, 3 Garden Warblers and a Chiffchaff (an adult starting to moult).
