Thursday 31st March 2005

A falcon is at Gulberwick which appears to be a Saker/Lanner type, perhaps the one that was on Yell earlier and perhaps the smaller of the two that was around last autumn.

The small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 17 Barnacle Geese and 2 Shovelers.

A Glaucous Gull and an Iceland Gull are at Nibon and a male Hen Harrier flew past Swinister, Northmavine.

The flock of 14 Barnacle Geese and the male Goosander are still at Uyeasound.

Great Tit and Dunnock at Cunningsburgh  Jim Nicolson

The Hawfinch is still at Baltasound.

The Great Tit and the Dunnock are at Cunningsburgh.

There are 12 Fieldfares and 2 Song Thrushes on Out Skerries.


Tuesday 29th March 2005

Hawfinch at Baltasound - Mike Pennington (2 pics), Micky Maher; Siskin at Cunningsburgh - Dougie Preston

A Hawfinch is at Baltasound, along with 2 Siskins, 2 Chaffinches, a Goldcrest and a Barnacle Goose while a Chiffchaff is at Norwick. A second-winter Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth.

The female Common Rosefinch is still at Cunningsburgh, along with a Great Tit, a Dunnock, a Siskin, 2 Goldcrests and 2 Chaffinches.

A female Stonechat is at Boddam and a Stock Dove is at Toab. A Bullfinch and a Chiffchaff are at Helendale. A Waxwing is in Scalloway.

The Stock Dove is still at Sullom and the male Hawfinch is still at North Roe. A Sparrowhawk and 5 Wood Pigeons are at Collafirth. A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Aith.


Monday 28th March 2005

Hawfinch at North Roe - Stan Brown; Wood Pigeon at Norwick and Greylag Geese at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

A Gyrfalcon flew over Gruti Field, near Upper Kergord, in the afternoon. There are also 2 Hen Harriers and 3 Sparrowhawks in the area, while 2 Barnacle Geese flew through the Kames.

The male and female King Eiders are both still in Bluemull Sound. A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Baltasound and a Chiffchaff is at Haroldswick, with 3 Siskins, 4 Chaffinches and 4 Goldcrests at various sites on the island.

There are 2 Hawfinches at North Roe and a Pied Wagtail at Collafirth. A Stock Dove is at Sullom.

There were 20 Pink-footed Geese at Scatness early in the morning. The usual Pink-footed Goose is still at Sandwick, there are 9 Bar-tailed Godwits at Virkie, 166 Wigeons and 2 Shovelers are on Loch of Spiggie and 5 Robins and 4 Goldcrests are at Sumburgh.

There are 3 Goosanders on Strand Loch and 9 Greenfinches and 2 Siskins on Trondra. A Bullfinch is in Lerwick.


Sunday 27th March 2005

Long-tailed Ducks - Jim White

The Common Rosefinch is still at Cunningsburgh. The Green-winged Teal is still at Scatness along with 3 Wheatears, a female Stonechat, an Iceland Gull and a Water Rail.

A Jackdaw, the Barnacle Goose, 9 Wood Pigeons, 3 Siskins, a Brambling and a Chaffinch are at Baltasound. A Hawfinch is at Haroldswick.

A Wheatear and a Woodcock are at Sand, Garderhouse, and a pair of Goosanders are in Weisdale Voe. A Hen Harrier is at Gonfirth, near Aith.


Saturday 26th March 2005

Siskin at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

The male King Eider is still at Linga in Bluemull Sound.

A Brambling, 3 Siskins, 3 Long-eared Owls and a Chiffchaff are at Baltasound.

A Glaucous Gull and 2 Goldcrests are at Eshaness and a male Bullfinch is at Sullom.

Common Rosefinch at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson

The Common Rosefinch is still at Cunningsburgh.

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston.

A Chiffchaff is at Baltasound. A male Siskin is at Voehead, Bressay.


Thursday 24th March 2005

King Eider on Linga - Micky Maher

A Gyrfalcon flew over Aith, heading east, in the morning.

The male King Eider was on Linga in Bluemull Sound and the female was the other side of the island. A Grey Wagtail is at Skaw, Unst, the Barnacle Goose is now at Burrafirth on Unst and a Yellowhammer is on Fetlar.

The Common Rosefinch is still at Cunningsburgh. There are 3 Wheatears at Grutness.


Wednesday 23rd March 2005

Long-eared Owl at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

The male King Eider is on Linga in Bluemull Sound. The Long-eared Owl is still at Baltasound and 2 Goldcrests and a Siskin are at Norwick.

A female Common Rosefinch is at Cunningburgh. A male Wheatear and a Stonechat are at Sumburgh and another Wheatear is at Virkie. The Pink-footed Goose is still at Sandwick, 8 Bar-tailed Godwits are at Pool of Virkie and 10 Coots are at Loch of Hillwell.

There are at least 2 Hen Harriers around Hill of Weisdale and Kergord and 2 Woodcocks in Upper Kergord. A male Peregrine Falcon is at Voe. There are 3 female Bullfinches at Helendale.

There are 10 Chaffinches, 2 Siskins, 2 Pied Wagtails and a Song Thrush at Collafirth, 7 Chaffinches at Busta and 3 Song Thrushes at Sullom. A female Stonechat is on Whalsay.


Tuesday 22nd March 2005

The female King Eider is off Belmont.

A male Bullfinch is at Hoswick, about a dozen Goldcrests are around Sumburgh with a Reed Bunting, 2 Song Thrushes and 2 Jack Snipes at Sumburgh Hotel. There are 2 male Stonechats at Sumburgh Head and another at Cunningsburgh, where there is also a Water Rail and a Greenfinch. A Mistle Thrush is at Gulberwick.

A male Bullfinch is at Helendale and a Pied Wagtail is at Bixter.

A Long-eared Owl is at Baltasound. A Wheatear is on Whalsay.


Monday 21st March 2005

Blackbird at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

A Saker-type falcon was at Basta Voe on Yell and the male King Eider has reappeared on Linga, Bluemull Sound.

A Chiffchaff, at least 10 Chaffinches and an Iceland Gull are at Baltasound.

A Pied Wagtail is at Boddam, the Pink-footed Goose is still at Sandwick and a female Stonechat is at Sumburgh. The male Pintail is still at Boddam.


Sunday 20th March 2005

Chaffinch at Baltasound - Mike Pennington; Fulmar on St Ninian's Isle - Bryan Gray

A Gyrfalcon flew south over Gluss, Northmavine.

There are Stonechats at Toab, Virkie and Trondra. There are 150 Blackbirds, about 5 Robins, 4 Goldcrests and a Woodcock at Sumburgh Head and Pied Wagtails at Virkie and Grutness. The Black-throated Diver is in Bay of Quendale. A female Siskin is at Cunningsburgh along with 6 Chaffinches. A Carrion Crow and a Chaffinch are at Sandwick. The Green-winged Teal and a male Gadwall are at Scatness along with a Chaffinch. There are 2 Siskins on Trondra.

A Greenfinch and a Wood Pigeon are at Helendale and a Goosander is at Strand.

On Unst, Pied Wagtails are at Skaw and Baltasound and 2 Chaffinches are at Baltasound.


Saturday 19th March 2005

Common Gull and Black-headed Gull at Uyeasound - Micky Maher

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston.

A male Stonechat is on Trondra.

The wintering Whimbrel is at West Voe of Sumburgh again. The Green-winged Teal and a male Gadwall are at Scatness and a Stonechat is at Virkie. There are 2 Chaffinches at Cunningsburgh.

A Slavonian Grebe is in the voe at Baltasound, where the Bar-tailed Godwit is still present.


Friday 18th March 2005

This swinging Hooded Crow seems to be full of the joys of spring! - Dougie Preston

A Mistle Thrush is at Gulberwick and a male Stonechat is at Virkie along with 7 Bar-tailed Godwits and 2 Sanderlings.

There are Glaucous Gulls at Belmont and Burrafirth on Unst. Two Goosanders at at Uyeasound and one is at Baltasound.

A Slavonian Grebe is at Sullom Voe. The Iceland Gull is still at Urafirth and a Chaffinch and some new Blackbirds are at Collafirth.

Other signs of spring, such as returning Red-throated Divers on freshwater and LBB Gulls, are now fairly widespread, while Guillemots are ashore through the day at Sumburgh Head.


Thursday 17th March 2005

Iceland Gull at Baltasound - Micky Maher

A male Stonechat is on Out Skerries, where Blackbirds have increased.

A Mistle Thrush is at Urafirth, 4 Wood Pigeons are at Collafirth and 5 Chaffinches are at Busta.

There are 4 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at Shetland Catch, Lerwick. A Chaffinch is at Firth.

The first-winter Iceland Gull is at Baltasound and a LBB Gull is at Haroldswick. A Bar-tailed Godwit is at Baltasound. A male Linnet is on Fetlar.


Wednesday 16th March 2005

South-easterlies brought male Chaffinches to Scousburgh and Baltasound.

There are still at least 3 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull in Lerwick.

A White-billed Diver was in Ronas Voe; although not far from Collafirth in a straight line it is along way by sea. A LBB Gull is at Collafirth.


Tuesday 15th March 2005

Iceland Gull and LBB Gull at Baltasound - Micky Maher

The first 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls of the year are at Baltasound, along with a first-winter Iceland Gull.

A Pink-footed Goose is at Sandwick.


Monday 14th March 2005

Skylark at Norwick - Micky Maher

There are 103 Skylarks, a Carrion Crow and a Song Thrush at Sandwick.

A second-winter Glaucous Gull was at Burrafirth.


Sunday 13th March 2005

Adult and first-winter Iceland Gulls visited Hamar, Baltasound, and a Barnacle Goose and a Long-eared Owl are at Baltasound and the male Goosander is at Uyeasound. The first Skylark in song was at Burrafirth and tThere are also 25 Skylarks at Baltasound and 20 at Uyeasound.

There are 25 Snow Buntings at Ayre Dyke, East Burra, and 2 Woodcocks and a Water Rail are at Ocraquoy.


Saturday 12th March 2005

Both male and female King Eiders were with Common Eiders off Belmont. A flock of 14 Barnacle Geese are at Uyeasound, 2 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull were at Hamar, Baltasound, during the day and a Long-eared Owl is at Baltasound.

The small Canada Goose and 16 Barnacle Geese are still at Spiggie. There are still 4 Bar-tailed Godwits at Pool of Virkie and there are 7 Coots at Loch of Hillwell.

Iceland Gull at Baltasound - Micky Maher; Purple Sandpiper at Lerwick - Dougie Preston

An adult Iceland Gull is at Baltasound, another is at Symbister, Whalsay, one is at Urafirth and there are 5 at Gremista, Lerwick.

Iceland Gull and Eiders at Lerwick Catch - Mike Pennington; Glaucous and Iceland Gull at Holmsgarth, Lerwick - Jon Dunn

At least 4 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls are in Lerwick.

The Chiffchaff is still at East Ham, Bressay.

A Carrion Crow is at Sandwick.


Wednesday 9th March 2005

Glaucous Gull - Micky Maher

A Glaucous Gull is at Belmont. A Goosander is at Uyeasound and a Little Grebe is at Loch of Snarravoe.

There are 7 Common Redpolls at Voe, 4 Greenfinches at Voe and a flock of 48 Ravens on the West Kame. A Woodcock, 2 Sparrowhawks and a Goldcrest are at Kergord.

What sounds like a Gyrfalcon was reported at Weisdale.

A male Blackcap is at Cunningsburgh and a Water Rail is at Gulberwick.


Monday 7th March 2005

The small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 17 Barnacle Geese and 170 Wigeons. There are 4 Bar-tailed Godwits still at Pool of Virkie.

The Chiffchaff is still at East Ham, Bressay.

A second-winter Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth.


Sunday 6th March 2005

Raven at Skaw and Rock Pipit at Uyeasound - Mike Pennington

A Gyrfalcon flew over Ocraquoy, south Mainland, this morning, and it or another flew over Veensgarth later.

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston. A Kestrel is at Tingwall and a pair of Goosanders are at Strand. A Goldcrest is at Catfirth.

A male King Eider is with Common Eiders between Belmont and Heogland, Unst. Also on Unst, a Hen Harrier is at Skaw and a Barnacle Goose and a Bar-tailed Godwit are at Baltasound, while 44 Wigeons at Uyeasound have arrived in the last few days and a pair of Goosanders are also there.

A male Scaup is at Bousta, Sandness, with 181 Wigeons at Norby. A pair of Common Scoters are in Ronas Voe, the male Pintail is at Collafirth and a second-winter Iceland Gull is at Urafirth.


Saturday 5th March 2005

Whooper Swans at Uyeasound and Starling at Westing - Mike Pennington

The American Coot is still on Loch of Benston, along with a Goosander.

What was presumably one of the Gyrfalcons flew over Sand Water.

The Dark-breasted Barn Owl is still at Reawick. The Chiffchaff is still at Scalloway. A Pink-footed Goose and 3 Song Thrushes are at Sandwick.

A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Westing, Unst, with a Little Grebe and a summer plumage Red-throated Diver on Loch of Snarravoe.

Snipe were heard drumming at East Ham, Bressay in the evening.

There are 2 male Bullfinches at Sound, Lerwick.

A second-winter Glaucous Gull is at Urafirth and 30 Snow Buntings are at Burraland, Northmavine.

The small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 17 Barnacle Geese.

A Pink-footed Goose and the European White-fronted Goose are at Sandwick.

The Yellowhammer is still at Helendale, a pair of Goosanders are on Loch of Tingwall and 2 ringtail Hen Harriers roosted at Sand Water.
