February 2005 Sightings

Monday 28th February 2005

Two ringtail Hen Harriers and a male Peregrine Falcon were hunting at Uyeasound in the afternoon, all in the air at the same time.

The Yellowhammer, a male Brambling and 2 Chaffinches are still at Helendale and the Grey Wagtail is still at Sound.

The Green-winged Teal is still at Scatness and the small Canada Goose and 17 Barnacle Geese are still at Loch of Spiggie. A European White-fronted Goose is at Sandwick, along with 2 Barnacle Geese, and a Goosander, 3 Knots and 5 Grey Herons are at East Voe of Scalloway.


Sunday 27th February 2005

A Gyrfalcon flew over Scord Quarry, near Scalloway.

A Hen Harrier roosted at Sand Water. The Chiffchaff is still at East Ham, Bressay.

The Black-throated Diver was off Scord, Sumburgh , and 2 Gadwalls and a Water Rail are at Scatness.

A male Peregrine Falcon is at Uyeasound.


Saturday 26th February 2005

Long-eared Owl at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

There are 2 Long-eared Owls at Baltasound.

A Grey Wagtail is at Sound, Lerwick.


Friday 25th February 2005

Curlew at Haroldswick - Micky Maher

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston and there are 2 Common Scoters and 4 Slavonian Grebes in Wadbister Voe.

The male King Eider is still at Symbister, Whalsay, along with a first-winter Iceland Gull and a first-winter Glaucous Gull.

An Iceland Gull is at Baltasound.

A Pink-footed Goose is at Spiggie and 4 Bar-tailed Godwits are at Pool of Virkie. Two Skylarks were in song at Scousburgh.


Thursday 24th February 2005

The White-billed Diver was in Quey Firth, just south of Collafirth. The Pintail was at Lochend and a Sparrowhawk and 2 Wood Pigeons are at Voxter.

A Yellowhammer and 2 Bullfinches are at Helendale and a first-winter Iceland Gull is on Loch of Clickimin.

A Little Grebe is on Loch of Snarravoe, Unst.


Wednesday 23rd February 2005

Green-winged Teal - Micky Maher

The Gyrfalcon was reported from Haroldswick again this morning. A male Green-winged Teal on Dam Loch, Uyeasound, is the first for Unst.

The Ring-necked Duck has moved to Papil Water on Fetlar.

The White-billed Diver is back in Collafirth, Northmavine, along with the male Pintail and a Sparrowhawk.

In Helendale, there is a female Bullfinch, a Song Thrush and about ten Redwings.


Tuesday 22nd February 2005

What must have been a Gyrfalcon was reported flying over Haroldswick in the afternoon. Also on Unst, a male Goosander is at Uyeasound, along with 11 Whooper Swans and a male Hen Harrier, and a first-winter Glaucous Gull is at Westing.

A Goldcrest at East Ham, Bressay, is another sign of early immigration.


Monday 21st February 2005

White-billed Diver at Collafirth - Dougie Preston

White-billed Diver at Collafirth - Roger Riddington; Iceland Gull at Lerwick - Jon Dunn

The adult White-billed Diver is still in Collafirth, Northmavine. A Wood Pigeon and a first-winter Iceland Gull are also there. What appears to be one of the hybrid Saker x Gyr Falcons was at Voxter.

A unseasonable Whimbrel is at West Voe of Sumburgh.

There are 4 Iceland Gulls in Lerwick, including an adult which is additional to the 9 on Saturday. There are still 3 Goosanders at Weisdale Voe. There are 230 Turnstones, a Song Thrush and a Glaucous Gull at Sandwick.

The Long-eared Owl is still at Baltasound, along with a Hen Harrier, while a Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth.


Sunday 20th February 2005

Long-eared Owl at Baltasound (2 photos) - Micky Maher; adult Iceland Gull (2 photos) and Long-eared Owl at Baltasound - Mike Pennington

A White-billed Diver is in Collafirth, Northmavine.

A Long-eared Owl, and Iceland Gull and 221 Greylag Geese are at Baltasound.

There are now 62 Snow Buntings on seed on Trondra.

The Black-throated Diver is off Scord.


Saturday 19th February 2005

Iceland Gulls (4 photos) and Glaucous Gull in Lerwick - Mike Pennington

There are 9 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at Shetland Catch in Lerwick.

There are 53 Snow Buntings, 15 Greenfinches and a Wood Pigeon on Trondra.

The small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 17 Barnacle Geese, 131 Tufted Ducks and 146 Redshanks. A male Pintail is at South Collafirth in Northmavine.

A first-winter Iceland Gull (different to both of yesterday's) is at Baltasound. A first-winter Glaucous Gull is at Gutcher on Yell.


Friday 18th February 2005

Iceland Gull of Kumlien's type at Baltasound - Micky Maher

The female King Eider is still off Belmont.

A Glaucous Gull and 2 Iceland Gulls were at Hamar, Baltasound, during the day, one a Kumliens' type.

There are 4 Bullfinches (a male and 3 females) at Sound, Lerwick. A Wood Pigeon is at Helendale.

The Little Grebe is still on Loch of Tingwall along with 100 Lapwings, 100 Redshanks and 150 Golden Plovers.


Thursday 17th February 2005

A pair of Bullfinches are at Gremista, Lerwick. There are 83 Oystercatchers at Bigton, flocks of 176 Curlews at Spiggie and 146 at Virkie and 4 Bar-tailed Godwits at Virkie.

The Little Grebe is still at East Voe of Scalloway and there is an Iceland Gull, a Fieldfare, 12 Greenfinches and 18 Snow Buntings on Trondra.

A Hen Harrier is at Caldback, Unst.


Wednesday 16th February 2005

The Ring-necked Duck is still on Fetlar.

The Green-winged Teal is still at Scatness and the small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 11 Barnacle Geese, 2 Ruddy Ducks and 3 Shovelers, while 24 Pochard are on Loch of Brow.

There are still 3 Goosanders in Weisdale Voe. The Mistle Thrush is still at Sandgarth, Voe, along with a Song Thrush, 10 Redwings and 2 Fieldfares.


Tuesday 15th February 2005

A Gyrfalcon flew over Norwick and Haroldswick in the afternoon heading towards Burrafirth; it would seem that at least 3 have been recorded so far this winter.

The King Eider is still off Whalsay, with a first-winter Iceland Gull also there.

There are 2 Long-eared Owls at Baltasound along with a Jack Snipe, a Merlin, 20 Snow Buntings, 175 Greylag Geese, 135 Golden Plovers and 22 Ringed Plovers. A Common Redpoll is at Uyeasound.

The male Green-winged Teal is still at Scatness along with a Barnacle Goose and a female Shoveler.

A Mistle Thrush is at Sandgarth, Voe. A Sparrowhawk and a Peregrine Falcon are at South Nesting. There are 10 Greenfinches, a male Brambling and a female Bullfinch at Helendale. Oystercatchers continue to return, with 20 at Loch of Tingwall today.

There are 6 Chaffinches at Busta and 3 Fieldfares at Collafirth, Northmavine.


Monday 14th February 2005

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston. There are 5 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull at the Catch in Lerwick.

There are 3 Glaucous Gulls at Westing on Unst.

There are 2 Water Rails at Boddam, 21 Snow Buntings at Sandwick, and a second-winter Iceland Gull and a Barnacle Goose at Scatness.

Up to 3 female Bullfinches are still at Tresta in west Mainland.


Sunday 13th February 2005

At least 7 Iceland Gulls are at Heogan, Bressay.

On Unst, there are at least 4 Glaucous Gulls and 3 Iceland Gulls at the north end of the island.

A first-winter Glaucous Gull was at Scatness and West Voe of Sumburgh. The male Green-winged Teal is still at Scatness.


Saturday 12th February 2005

Gyrfalcon over the Kames (2 photos) - Steve Minton; Iceland Gull in Lerwick - Mike Pennington

A white phase Gyrfalcon was seen over Sand Water and the Kames in mid-afternoon. Note that the Fetlar Gyr was last seen flying north over Unst last Saturday, while another was seen and photographed 80 km offshore on Friday (see photos below).

At least 3 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull are still in Lerwick. A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Scalloway. There are 26 Slavonian Grebes and 4 Knots at Tresta, a first-winter Iceland Gull at Melby, a male Scaup at Loch of Collaster, and a European White-fronted Goose and a Jack Snipe at Loch of Huxter. There are 4 Goldcrests, 6 Woodcocks and a female Sparrowhawk at Kergord.

A Hen Harrier and 20 Snow Buntings are on East Burra.

A Kestrel is on Bressay at Mail.


Friday 11th February 2005

Gyrfalcon, 80km west of Ramna Stacks (carrying Little Auk in one photo) - Allister Irvine

Iceland Gull at Baltasound and Glaucous Gull at Westing (2 photos) - Micky Maher

A Gyrfalcon was seen on board the fishing vessel MV Zephyr, about 80 km west of Ramna Stacks.

The male Ring-necked Duck is still on Fetlar.

A first-winter Iceland Gull and a first-winter Glaucous Gull are at Baltasound and a first-winter Glaucous Gull and a first-winter Iceland Gull are at Westing. There are 30 Snow Buntings at Uyeasound.

An adult Glaucous Gull, the male Green-winged Teal and a female Shoveler are at Scatness, a Jack Snipe is at the Sumburgh Hotel and a Grey Plover and 6 Bar-tailed Godwits are at Pool of Virkie.

There are 3 Goosanders at Whiteness Voe. There are still 2 female Bullfinches at Tresta.


Thursday 10th February 2005

Dark-billed Common Gull at Clickimin - Steve Minton

Oystercatchers are definitely back in force with 57 at Spiggie, 51 at Boddam, 46 at Grutness and 41 at Bigton, while there are 31 Snow Buntings are at Sandwick.

There are 5 Iceland Gulls at Ness of Kirkabister on Bressay and 6 around Gremista, Lerwick.

There are 2 Chaffinches at Sletts Park, Lerwick. A Woodcock, the male Brambling and 2 Dunnocks are at Helendale, and 2 Iceland Gulls are on Loch of Clickimin (along with a dark-billed Common Gull). There are 2 Jackdaws at Kergord and 3 Goosanders at Strand.


Wednesday 9th February 2005

The Ring-necked Duck is still on Fetlar. There are Iceland Gulls at Westing and Baltasound.

The usual Black-throated Diver is in Bay of Quendale and there are 80 Wigeons and a Barnacle Goose are at Scatness.

There are 27 Oystercatchers, a female Bullfinch and a Water Rail at Cunningsburgh.

A Long-eared Owl is at Helendale.


Tuesday 8th February 2005

Iceland Gulls at Shetland Catch - Micky Maher

The American Coot is still at Loch of Benston, along with a Bar-tailed Godwit.

About 6 Iceland Gulls are still in Lerwick. A Yellowhammer and a Long-eared Owl are at Helendale along with 2 Song Thrushes and a Dunnock.

Oystercatchers are clearly returning with 37 at Bigton and 30 at Spiggie. A Jack Snipe is at Cunningsburgh and 31 Snow Buntings are at Sandwick.


Monday 7th February 2005

The male Green-winged Teal has reappeared at Scatness, where there is also a Barnacle Goose, 36 Wigeons and 4 Gadwalls.

The Dark-breasted Barn Owl is still at Reawick. There are 3 Jackdaws with Rooks at Kergord.

There are still at least 9 Iceland Gulls in Lerwick.


Sunday 6th February 2005

Purple Sandpiper at Westing - Mike Pennington

The male Ring-necked Duck is still on Fetlar, with a Pink-footed Goose and a Short-eared Owl also on the island.

There are Iceland Gulls at Baltasound and Uyeasound and an Oystercatcher at Uyeasound. The Velvet Scoter is still of Belmont.

There are 10 Redwings, a Fieldfare and a Water Rail at Ocraquoy. There are still 7 Bar-tailed Godwits at Pool of Virkie.


Saturday 5th February 2005

American Coot, Dark-breasted Barn Owl, Whooper Swan and Rook - Mike Pennington

The Gyrfalcon was at Muness on Unst.

The American Coot is still on Loch of Benston.

The Dark-bellied Barn Owl is still at Reawick.

There are at least 5 Iceland Gulls in Lerwick and one at Scalloway. Two Goosanders and a Little Grebe are in the East Voe of Scalloway. Another Little Grebe is still on Loch of Tingwall. There are 19 Greenfinches and 30 Snow Buntings on Trondra. The Chiffchaff is still at Scalloway.

There are 2 Water Rails and 2 Moorhens at Cunningsburgh.


Friday 4th February 2005

A Song Thrush, 3 Dunnocks, 2 Chaffinches, 7 Greenfinches and 2 Bullfinches are in Helendale and Glaucous Gulls are on Loch of Clickimin and off the Victoria pier in Lerwick.


Thursday 3rd February 2005

There are 31 Snow Buntings, 10 Twites and a Water Rail at Ollaberry.


Wednesday 2nd February 2005

Glaucous Gull at Baltasound and Ring-necked Duck and Rock PIpit on Fetlar - Micky Maher

The American Coot is still on Loch of Benston.

The Gyrfalcon is still on Fetlar and the male Ring-necked Duck is on also there on Loch of Funzie.

The male King Eider is still off Whalsay, off Symbister, where there is also a first-winter Iceland Gull, and a Chaffinch is at Skibberhoull.

A Yellowhammer is at Helendale, along with a Brambling and a Dunnock. There are at least 5 first-winter Iceland Gulls and a first-winter Glaucous Gull at Lerwick Catch and 5 first-winter Iceland Gulls at Scalloway.

The Velvet Scoter and a Glaucous Gull are at Belmont and singles Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull are at Baltasound.

The small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie along with 22 Barnacle Geese and there are 426 Golden Plovers and 5 Bar-tailed Godwits at Pool of Vikie, with 2 Jack Snipes in the willows. A female Bullfinch is at Sandwick.


Tuesday 1st February 2005

The Dark-breasted Barn Owl is still at Reawick.

The Ring-necked Duck is still on Fetlar. An adult Iceland Gull is at Haroldswick along with a Water Rail.

First-winter Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull are still at Urafirth.

A Glaucous Gull has been feeding on dead seal at Maryfield, Bressay, for last few days.

A juvenile Peregrine is at Loch of Brow and the small Canada Goose is still at Loch of Spiggie. There are 21 Redwings, 2 Fieldfares and 6 Skylarks at Toab, a female Shoveler at Scatness and a Water Rail at Virkie.
