Sunday 31st October 2004
A Hawfinch is at Voxter, a Turtle Dove
and a Waxwing are at Voe, 2 Waxwings are at Sullom, a Dunnock
and a Sparrowhawk are at Kergord, and a reasonable scatter of
Blackcaps and Bullfinches are in the north end of Mainland. A dead
Hawfinch was found at Sullom, where there is a Sparrowhawk.
There are 20 Waxwings still at Swinister, Sandwick, and 15 at Sletts
Park, Lerwick. At Gremista,
Lerwick, there are 3 Waxwings and 3 Greenfinches.
On Unst, a Black Redstart is at Haroldswick, a Waxwing is at
Baltasound, while there are at least 27 Bullfinches still present.
There were few observations on Foula although c 300 Greylag Geese and
c 100 Snow Buntings were noted along with 7 Whooper Swans, 3
Wigeons, c 20 Teals, c20 Mallards, 3 Goldeneyes, 2
Moorhens, a Robin, a Blackcap, 2 Twites and a
Bullfinch.
Saturday 30th October 2004
A Great Grey Shrike is on Whalsay and the juvenile Rose-coloured
Starling is still there.
Another Great Grey Shrike is at Spiggie and other birds in south
Mainland included a Jack Snipe, 2 Woodcocks, 3 Wood Pigeons,
3 Waxwings, 500 Fieldfares, 250 Redwings and 12
Goldcrests at Sumburgh, 65 Common Snipes flushed from the ‘S-shaped
pool’ at Sumburgh Hotel, 150 Long-tailed Ducks and 2 Common
Scoters in the West Voe of Sumburgh, 3 Jack Snipes, 4 Wood Pigeons,
a Grey Wagtail and a Yellow-browed Warbler at Quendale, 2
Pintails at Loch of Hillwell, 79 Whooper Swans at Lochs of Spiggie
and Brow, and 3 Jack Snipes, a Grey Wagtail and a Lesser
Whitethroat at Toab.
On Foula there were 7 Whooper Swans, c 500 Greylag Geese, a
Pink-footed Goose, 3 Wigeons, c 25 Mallards, 4 Goldeneyes,
a Moorhen, c 40 Golden Plovers, 3 Jack Snipes, a Wood
Pigeon, a Dunnock, a Robin, 3 Blackcaps, at least one
Bullfinch and a Yellowhammer.
Again, small numbers of Waxwings and Northern Bullfinches
(maximum 11 at Toab) are widespread, but
poor weather inhibited activity.
Friday 29th October 2004
A Great Grey Shrike and a Yellowhammer are at Sumburgh Head.
A ringtail Hen Harrier is still at Collafirth along with a
Sparrowhawk and another Sparrowhawk and a Lesser Whitethroat
were at Sullom.
On Foula there were 7 Whooper Swans, c 300 Greylag Geese, 2
Wigeons, 11 Mallards, 6 Goldeneyes, a Water Rail, 3
Curlews, 80+ Blackbirds, 50+ Fieldfares, 10+ Redwings,
3 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, 2 Bramblings, 2 Greenfinches
and 4 Bullfinches.
Small numbers of Waxwings still around, maximum 5 in Lerwick, and
still Northern Bullfinches around as well, but in small groups.
Thursday 28th October 2004
A large dark falcon was flying around Skaw, Unst in the afternoon.
Otherwise, nothing notable reported other than Waxwings (largest flock 16 in
Lerwick) and Bullfinches (largest flock 14 in Sandwick).
Wednesday 27th October 2004
A Pallas's Warbler is at Norwick on Unst, along with 16 Waxwings,
while the Turtle Dove and a Yellowhammer are still at Baltasound.
There are 16 Waxwings around Collafirth and Ollaberry.
On Foula, there were 7 Whooper Swans, c 30 Greylag Geese, 2
Wigeons, 22 Teals, 11 Mallards, 2 Goldeneyes, a
Purple Sandpiper, a Great Skua, a Wood Pigeon, a Waxwing,
20+ Fieldfares, 50+ Redwings, 2 Blackcaps, 3 Goldcrests,
5 Bramblings, 8 Bullfinches and a Yellowhammer.
There are more Northern Bullfinches moving through with 50 on Unst,
including 25 at Lamba Ness, about 12 around Collafirth and Ollaberry and a flock of 18 at Sandwick.
Tuesday 26th October 2004
A Lanceolated Warbler is at East Ham, Bressay. It is one of the latest
British records although there have been three in November, including one on
Fair isle in 1960. There are also 7 Waxwings and 16 Northern
Bullfinches on Bressay.
The juvenile Rose-coloured Starling is still on Whalsay, along with 21
Waxwings and 20 Northern Bullfinches.
The Black Redstart and a Grey Wagtail are at Sumburgh.
The Black Redstart is at Norwick, along with 16 Waxwings.
Another 4 Waxwings are at Baltasound and there were just 11 Northern
Bullfinches recorded on the island today.
On Foula there were 2 Whooper Swans, c 30 Greylag Geese, a
Wigeon, 9 Teals, 5 Mallards, a Goldeneye, a Great
Skua, 2 Waxwings, a Dunnock, a Robin, a Chiffchaff,
2 Goldcrests, 2 Bramblings, 2 Greenfinches, 5+
Bullfinches and a Yellowhammer.
Monday 25th October 2004
An Isabelline Wheatear is at Sumburgh Head; it has been present since
Friday. It is the fourth for Shetland after singles, all found in September, on
Whalsay in 1994, Fair Isle in 1998 and Fetlar in 2001.
Also around Sumburgh there is a Yellow-browed Warbler, the Black
Redstart, 3 Woodcocks and a Short-eared Owl, while a Mistle
Thrush is at Toab, a Grey Wagtail is at Scousburgh and there are 3
Ring Ouzels at Maywick.
The Black Redstart is still at Norwick, a Reed Bunting is at
Burrafirth and a Grey Wagtail is at Baltasound.
Another wave of Waxwings seem to have come through with about 50 on
Unst, including 40 at Baltasound, 25 at Sandgarth, Voe, 35 at Maywick and 40 at
Toab.
The largest flock of Northern Bullfinches reported today was just 15
at Maywick.
On Foula there were few observations though there were c 110 Greylag Geese,
a Pink-footed Goose, c 300 Eiders, 5 Long-tailed Ducks, a
Waxwing, a Robin, smaller numbers of Fieldfares and
Redwings, c 15 Bullfinches, c 10 Snow Buntings and a
Yellowhammer.
Sunday 24th October 2004
A Dark-breasted Barn Owl is at Veensgarth. A Red-breasted Flycatcher
is at Upper Kergord and a Black Redstart is at Helendale.
A Stock Dove is at Toab, a Kestrel is at Scousburgh and the Black Redstart is still at
Grutness.
A Shelduck is at Baltasound along with the Turtle Dove and a
Grey Wagtail.
Waxwings are still scattered around the islands but the largest flocks
reported were flocks of 20, 7 and 5 in Lerwick and 16 on Bressay.
Northern Bullfinches are still widespread, but mainly in small flocks
and there are now just 3 at Valyie, but a flock of 22 were at Baltasound, and
there were 29 on Bressay, while
numbers are building up on Foula, were there are now 70.
Also on Foula there were 7 Whooper Swans, 50+ Greylag Geese, a
Wigeon, 27 Teals, 14 Mallards, a Goldeneye, 2
Moorhens, a Purple Sandpiper, 3 Jack Snipes, a Common Gull,
a Grey Wagtail, 2 Dunnocks, 2 Robins, 80+ Blackbirds,
c 300 Fieldfares, 4 Song Thrushes, 500+ Redwings, 5
Blackcaps, a Goldcrest, a Chaffinch, 6 Bramblings, 7
Greenfinches, a Siskin, 6 Snow Buntings and 2 Yellowhammers.
Saturday 23rd October 2004
A Pied Wheatear is at Scousburgh. A Swallow is at Quendale
along with the Whinchat and 21 Pink-footed Geese, while a Black
Redstart is at Sumburgh.
A first-year male Siberian Stonechat is at Cullingsburgh, Bressay. A
first-winter Iceland Gull is at Lerwick Catch.
No new birds on Unst but the Black Redstart is still at Norwick and
the Turtle Dove is still at Baltasound and Northern Bullfinches
are down to 32 with just 8 at Valyie.
A Great Tit is at Brae. A ringtail Hen Harrier is at
Collafirth, along with 32 Northern Bullfinches.
Most Waxwings seem to have left with 4 at West Baila, Lerwick, 12
around Sumburgh and Quendale, 12
around Hoswick and Sandwick, 8 at Brae and 1-2 elsewhere. A flock of
17 Northern Bullfinches is at Sandwick. There are 75 Whooper Swans
at Loch of Spiggie and 3 Bar-tailed Godwits at Virkie.
A Yellowhammer and a Common Redstart are on Fetlar.
On Foula there were 7 Whooper Swans, 100+ Greylag Geese, 25
Teals, 12 Mallards, a Water Rail, c 70 Golden Plovers,
2 Dunlins, 3 Jack Snipes, 2 Great Skuas, a Common Gull,
a Grey Wagtail, a Robin, 90+ Blackbirds, 400+ Fieldfares,
c 5 Song Thrushes, 600+ Redwings, a Lesser Whitethroat, 9
Blackcaps, 3 Chiffchaffs, 2 Goldcrests, c 15 Bramblings,
2 Greenfinches, a Common Redpoll, c 30 Bullfinches, 3
Snow Buntings and a Reed Bunting.
Friday 22nd October 2004
On Out Skerries there were 1000 Fieldfares, 4 Ring Ouzels, 800
Redwings, 200 Blackbirds, 60 Song Thrushes, 20 Robins,
10 Blackcaps, 4 Chiffchaffs, 5 Goldcrests, a Hawfinch,
2 Greenfinches, 17 Bullfinches, 3 Waxwings, 2 Black
Redstarts, a Common Redstart, a Dunnock, 40 Bramblings,
7 Woodcocks, a Jack Snipe, 15 Snow Buntings, 2 Reed
Buntings, a Water Rail and 2 Common Redpolls.
A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling is on Whalsay, and has probably been
present since Tuesday, while a Black Redstart is also on the island.
On Unst, there are 2 Hawfinches at Haroldswick, a Black Redstart
and 90 Bramblings at Norwick, and a Siberian Chiffchaff and the
Turtle Dove at Baltasound. Northern Bullfinches have largely moved
on, with no more than 25 including 15 at Valyie, while there were no more than 6
Waxwings. A good scatter of thrushes included at least 1000 Fieldfares
and 1000 Redwings, as well as 80 Blackbirds at Baltasound.
A Yellow-browed Warbler and a
Lesser Whitethroat are at Toab while at Scatness there are
5 Song Thrushes, 100+ Blackbirds, a
male Sparrowhawk, a Woodcock, a Jack Snipe, 700
Fieldfares, 300 Redwings and 6 Waxwings.
On Foula there were the two Whooper Swans, at least 36 Greylag
Geese, 7 Teals, a Red-breasted Merganser,
a Grey Heron,
3 Ringed Plovers, c 70 Golden Plovers, 13 Lapwings, a
Purple Sandpiper, 2 Jack Snipes, 2 Woodcocks, a Great Skua,
a Common Gull, 24 Waxwings, a Dunnock, 4 Robins, the
Stonechat, a Ring Ouzel, 100+ Blackbirds, 5000+
Fieldfares, c 10 Song Thrushes, 1000+ Redwings, a Garden
Warbler, 10 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, c 16 Bramblings,
3 Greenfinches, 10 Bullfinches and a Snow Bunting.
Waxwings are mainly in Lerwick with counts of 26 at Sound, 18 at
Sletts Park, 11 at Burgh Road and 10 at Gremista.
Thursday 21st October 2004
Wind and rain and few birds so all of note were at least 60 Bullfinches
at Norwick, 2 Waxwings at Haroldswick, 2 Waxwings, 2 Reed
Buntings and the
Turtle Dove at Baltasound, a Ring Ouzel at Collafirth, 8 Waxwings
at Brae, 7 Waxwings in Lerwick and 2 Waxwings at Scatness.
Wednesday 20th October 2004
The White's Thrush is still at Swining and the male King Eider
is at Cat Firth.
The American Golden Plover is still at Funzie, Fetlar.
A Red-breasted Flycatcher is on Bressay.
On Foula today the Pechora Pipit at Ham was seen again.
At Quendale 12,320 Fieldfares flew south over between 08.00 and 10.30.
There were also 34 Song Thrushes, 450 Redwings, 100 Blackbirds,
7 Blackcaps, a Grey Wagtail, a Water Rail, and 2 Jack
Snipes at Quendale, the Richard's Pipit, 420 Fieldfares, 2
Siskins and the Whinchat at Toab, 2 Greenfinches at
Scousburgh, and 550 Fieldfares at Scatness.
There are 80 Bramblings
at Sandgarth, Voe, and 120 at Busta. A Long-eared Owl and a
Sparrowhawk are at Collafirth.
A Ring Ouzel, a Yellowhammer and a Reed Bunting are new
at Norwick, along with 180 Bramblings, another Yellowhammer and
the Turtle Dove are at
Baltasound, while thrushes were on the move for a few hours after dawn with at
least 2000 Redwings and 2000 Fieldfares passing over Baltasound.
Another 400 Redwings were in the Norwick area.
Also present on Foula were 2 Whooper Swans (an adult has joined the
juvenile on Mill Loch), 8 Greylag Geese, 6 Wigeons, 14 Teals,
10 Mallards, c 280 Eiders, a Goldeneye, a Water Rail,
c 80 Golden Plovers, 12 Lapwings, 4 Jack Snipes, a
Common Gull, a Grey Wagtail, an alba Wagtail, a Dunnock,
a Robin, a Ring Ouzel, 100+ Blackbirds, c 500 Fieldfares,
20+ Song Thrushes, c 1500 Redwings, 10 Blackcaps, a
Chiffchaff, 5 Goldcrests, c 50 Bramblings, 6 Greenfinches,
10 Bullfinches, 4 Snow Buntings, a Yellowhammer and a
Reed Bunting.
Waxwings - all these flocks seem to be different as they seem to be
moving through, while there were several other reports of single figures - 23
and 12 at Baltasound, 24 on Foula, 40 at Brae, 3 flocks totally 78 in Lerwick, 40 at Hoswick and Sandwick, 53 at Toab, 40 and 30 at Quendale, 39 at
Scatness, 20 at Sumburgh Hotel, 3 flocks totalling 27 at Sumburgh airport and 25 and 20 at Sumburgh
Head.
Northern Bullfinches - at least 125 on Unst including 90 at Norwick
with a flock of 70 at Valyie. Odd reports of up to 6 in south and central Mainland.

Waxwings in Lerwick - George Petrie
The White's Thrush is still at Swining, along with the Pied
Flycatcher.
A Whinchat and a Black Redstart are at Toab, a Reed Bunting at Virkie and 2
Greenfinches are at Scatness. A Wheatear is at Sandwick along with
the
14 Pink-footed Geese and a Barnacle Goose.
The Turtle Dove is still at Baltasound.
On Foula there were the juvenile Whooper Swan, 20 Greylag Geese,
8 Wigeons, 10 Teals, 17 Mallards, 3 Jack Snipes, 2
Waxwings, 20+ Fieldfares, 5+ Song Thrushes, 200+
Redwings, a Blackcap, 3 Goldcrests, 5 Bramblings, 5
Greenfinches, a Common Redpoll and 5 Bullfinches.
A Little Egret has been reported form Sullom Voe near Mavis Grind.
Waxwings are becoming more prominent with a record Shetland flock of
80 at West Yell, 44 at Norwick on Unst, 33 on Fetlar, 20 at
Sandsound, west Mainland, flocks of 27, 15 and 8 in Lerwick and another flock of
60 flying north at Brig of Fitch, just north of Lerwick.
No systematic Northern Bullfinch counts today, but similar numbers to
yesterday on Unst, including about 50 at Norwick, 16 on Fetlar, and about 100 at Cunningsburgh. Note that late submissions
take yesterday's total to 365 - and they're just the ones that have been
reported - almost everyone who takes even the remotest interest in the birds in
their garden must have seen one by now.

Northern Bullfinch at Norwick -

The White's Thrush is still at Swining. An adult King Eider at
Catfirth is presumably one of the birds from last winter. A Yellow-browed
Warbler is at Vidlin.
On Unst, the exilipes Arctic Redpoll is still present at
Norwick along with a male Bluethroat and 18 Waxwings, a
Red-breasted Flycatcher, 16 Waxwings and the Turtle Dove are
at Baltasound, a Grey Wagtail flew over Northdale where there was a
Water Rail, and a first-winter Glaucous Gull and a Water Rail
are at Burrafirth.
The male Ring-necked Duck is still on Loch of Clickimin along with a
Slavonian Grebe and a Long-eared Owl is at Frakkafield, while a
flock of 31 Waxwings is in Lerwick.
There are 14 Pink-footed Geese and a Barnacle Goose at Sandwick
and a juvenile Peregrine Falcon at Hoswick. Possibly the same
Peregrine Falcon was on Mousa, along with a Long-eared Owl.
On Foula there were the Whooper Swan, c 20 Greylag Geese, 5
Mallards, a Goldeneye, a Merlin, a Purple Sandpiper, a
Wood Pigeon, a Dunnock, a Robin, 40+ Blackbirds, 30+
Fieldfares, 10+ Song Thrushes, 200+ Redwings, 3
Blackcaps, a Goldcrest, 6 Bramblings, a Greenfinch, a
Lapland Bunting and 2 Snow Buntings.
Northern Bullfinch watch: at least 115 on Unst including a flock of 45
feeding on standing corn at Norwick, 23 on Yell, 6 on Foula, 73 in central
Mainland, 18 in west Mainland, 57 in south Mainland: 292 in
total. There were also over 100 on Fair Isle today. The previous record annual total
(itself far higher than any other) was 450 in 1994. This seems to have been
exceeded many times over so far.

Waxwing and Richard's Pipit on Fetlar -

The White's Thrush is still at Swining, along with a late Pied
Flycatcher.
The American Golden Plover is still on Fetlar, along with yesterday's
Richard's Pipits and 4 Waxwings. A Turtle Dove is at Baltasound
and 3 late Swallows at Haroldswick. There are 5 Waxwings at
Gutcher on Yell.
There are 18 Waxwings at Sletts Park, Lerwick, and 3 at Sandgarth,
Voe.
On Foula there were the juvenile Whooper Swan, 6 Wigeons, 11
Teals, 15 Mallards, a Sparrowhawk, a Water Rail, 3
Moorhens, 6 Jack Snipes, a Common Gull, an alba Wagtail,
a Dunnock, a Robin, the Stonechat, 40+ Blackbirds,
100+ Fieldfares, 150+ Redwings, 10+ Song Thrushes, a
Grasshopper Warbler, 3 Blackcaps, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2
Goldcrests, a Chaffinch, c 15 Bramblings, a Greenfinch,
4 Common Redpolls, c 20 Bullfinches (12 trapped all new and no
retraps from the 8 ringed yesterday or the 3 the day before) and a Lapland
Bunting.
Northern Bullfinch watch: at least 42 on Unst, 3 on Yell, 6 on Fetlar, 20 on
Foula, and 23 at various sites around central Mainland: 104 in
total.
Saturday 16th October 2004
The White's Thrush has been relocated at Swining and there are 8 Waxwings there.
A Dark-breasted Barn Owl is around the farm at Gunnista, Bressay. A
Bluethroat is also at the same site and there are also 2 Waxwings at
Brough and a male Black Redstart at Cullingsbrough on Bressay. A
Waxwing and a Greenfinch are at Sletts Park, Lerwick.
The King Eider which has been around Scalloway was in Clift Sound off
Trondra.
The Pallas's Warbler is still at Maywick and a Richard's Pipit
is at Toab. There are 11 Pink-footed
Geese at Sandwick and 65 Barnacle Geese at Loch of Spiggie, while a
juvenile Peregrine Falcon, 9 Waxwings and a Lapland Bunting
are at Sumburgh and a Turtle Dove is at Quendale. There are also 32
Waxwings at Sandwick, while another 2 Waxwings
are at Fladdabister.
On Unst, 3 Waxwings flew over Skaw, where there was a Sparrowhawk,
and a Long-eared Owl is at
Northdale. Another Long-eared Owl is at Cullivoe on Yell.
On Fetlar there is a Richard's Pipit and 8 Waxwings.
On Foula there were 21 Greylag Geese, a Water Rail, a Ringed
Plover, c 70 Golden Plovers, c 15 Lapwings, a Dunlin, a
Jack Snipe, 4 Woodcocks, a Wood Pigeon, 2 Waxwings,
a Dunnock, a Robin, the Stonechat, a Wheatear, 30+
Blackbirds, 100+ Fieldfares, 10+ Song Thrushes, 150+
Redwings, 3 Blackcaps, 2 Goldcrests, c 15 Bramblings, a
Greenfinch, 8 Northern Bullfinches, a Lapland Bunting and
c10 Snow Buntings.
Northern Bullfinch watch: at least 14 on Unst, 12 on Fetlar, 5 on
Yell, 8 on Foula, 16 at North Collafirth, 20 at Swining, 6 on Bressay, 8 in Helendale, 17 at Fladdabister, 15
between Maywick and Geosetter and 39 between Quendale and Sumburgh: 148 in
total.

A rather elusive Blyth's Reed Warbler was at Skaw, Unst; after bring
seen well it disappeared for over an hour before being trapped and was not seen
again. Also on Unst, the exilipes Arctic Redpoll is still at
Norwick, a hornemanni Arctic Redpoll is at Uyeasound (possibly the
Skaw bird from last weekend) along with 2 Grey Plovers and a Reed
Warbler, a Turtle Dove is at Baltasound, the western Stonechat
is still at Burrafirth and there are 2 Siberian Chiffchaffs and a
Mistle Thrush at Norwick.
An exilipes Arctic Redpoll was at Mid Yell with 2 Waxwings
at Otterswick and a Reed Bunting at Ulsta.
The Common Yellowthroat was not seen today, but a Hoopoe flew in off
the sea, a flock of 30 Waxwings appeared briefly and a Pallas's
Warbler was found in the afternoon.
Other Waxwings included 10 at Hoswick and 26 at Sandwick in south
Mainland, 3 at Tresta in west Mainland and 8 at Stendaal, South Nesting. There
are 4 Carrion Crows, 8 Pink-footed Goose and a Barnacle Goose
at Sandwick.
A Richard's Pipit and 2 Lapland Buntings are in the Ham area on
Bressay.
On Foula there was the juvenile Whooper Swan, 6 Wigeons, 12
Teals, c 20 Mallards, a Ringed Plover, c 15 Lapwings,
10 Jack Snipes, 16 Curlews, c 170 Herring Gulls, c 200
Greater Black-back Gulls, a Ring Ouzel, c 30 Blackbirds, c 400
Fieldfares, a Mistle Thrush, c30 Song Thrushes, c 400
Redwings, a Grasshopper Warbler, a Reed Warbler, 6
Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, a Goldcrest, c 20 Bramblings,
a Siskin, a Lapland Bunting, c 10 Snow Buntings and one of
the Little Buntings.
One feature of the day were the Northern Bullfinches. They were moving
through, so there may be some duplication in these counts (but birds at the same
site assumed to be the same may be different). On Unst - 8 at Skaw (3 males), 7
at Norwick (4 males), a male at Haroldswick, 8 at Baltasound (3 males) one at
Westing and 4
at Uyeasound (one male). There were 11 on Fetlar. On Yell - 3 at Hamnavoe (one male), a female at
Otterswick, a male at Mid Yell and a male at Windhouse. In north Mainland, 18
which may or may not include 7 at North Collafirth (2 males). In central
Mainland, 3 at Sandgarth, Voe (one male), 3 at Helendale and 2 at
Frakkafield. In south Mainland, one at Wester Quarff, 6 at Geosetter (3 males),

Goldcrests and Bramblings were all obvious today.

A male Common Yellowthroat was seen briefly at the end of the valley
at Maywick in the early afternoon. It is not the same as the Foula bird, as it
has much more obvious mask.
The exilipes Arctic Redpoll is still at Norwick and there are
still 3 Bullfinches at Skaw.
A Bluethroat is at Scousburgh and a Bullfinch is at Quendale. A Water Rail
is at Sandgarth, Voe. A Peregrine Falcon flew over Brindister. There are
4 Carrion Crows at Sandwick, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits still at Pool of
Virkie and 41 Whooper Swans at Loch of Spiggie.
New on Foula were two male Bullfinches and also seen were 5 Greylag
Geese, a Kestrel, 3 Jack Snipes, 3 Woodcocks, 3
Great Skuas, 182 Greater Black-back Gulls, a Robin, the

On Foula, the Ham Pechora Pipit was still present (which means that
both were here yesterday) as were the Bullfinch and the two Little
Buntings. Also present were the lone juvenile Whooper Swan, 3
Greylag Geese, 7 Mallards, the Long-tailed Duck, 3
Red-breasted Mergansers, 5 Jack Snipes, 3 Great Skuas, 2
Common Gulls, c 40 Herring Gulls, c 75 Greater Black-backed Gulls,
a Razorbill, a Grey Wagtail, a White Wagtail, 3
Wheatears, c 50 Fieldfares, c 20 Song Thrushes, c 50
Redwings, 8 Blackcaps, the Yellow-browed Warbler, 4
Chiffchaffs, 3 Goldcrests, 17 Bramblings, a Common Redpoll,
5 Snow Buntings and the Reed Bunting.
On Unst, the exilipes Arctic Redpoll was relocated at Norwick

A Pomarine Skua flew south past Sumburgh Head and another

The White's Thrush is still at Swining, along with a Yellow-browed
Warbler. A Waxwing is at Sandgarth, Voe. The Ring-necked Duck
is still at Loch of Clickimin.
On Foula one of the Pechora Pipits, the Yellow-browed Warbler,
the Bullfinch and both Little Buntings were seen again.
A probable Goshawk was at Sullom plantation.
There are still 2 Bullfinches at Skaw, Unst, a Bullfinch at Norwick, along with a selection of Common
Redpolls, and 4 Pink-footed Geese at Baltasound.
A moribund Hoopoe was found at West Sandwick on Yell.

The White's Thrush is still at Swining.
A male Ring-necked Duck on Loch of Clickimin is the most significant
new arrival, although several northern Bullfinches were pleasant.
On Foula, the Common Yellowthroat has not been seen today but a
Bullfinch is new in and there are still 2 Pechora Pipits, a Common
Rosefinch and a Little Bunting.
The hornemanni Arctic Redpoll was seen briefly at Skaw on Unst
today and there were 4 Bullfinches there and another at Norwick, along
with at least one Siberian Chiffchaff.
A male Bullfinch is at Sandgarth, near Voe. A Waxwing is at
Hoswick, and a Garden Warbler is at Scousburgh and 2
more Bullfinches are around Sumburgh somewhere.

The Common Yellowthroat was still present on Foula and there were also
2 Pechora Pipits (a probable from yesterday was confirmed and the
original was still present), the 3 Taiga Bean Geese, a Yellow-browed
Warbler, a Common Rosefinch and the second Little Bunting from
yesterday (which was trapped today).
A Pied Wheatear is at Skaw, Whalsay. It is the fifth for Shetland
following singles on Fair Isle in 1989, Sumburgh and Lerwick in 1991 and Toab in
2000.
A White's Thrush at Swining near Vidlin continues the mini-invasion -
it is the fourth of the autumn.
A hornemanni Arctic Redpoll is at Skaw on Unst and there are
Siberian Chiffchaffs at Norwick and Baltasound.
The American Golden Plover is still at Funzie, Fetlar.
Several other redpolls are on Unst and Fetlar (at least) and they include
Mealy, Greenland and very pale birds!
The Richard's Pipit is still at Sandwick, along with 2 Waxwings.
A Red-breasted Flycatcher is at Tresta in west Mainland. there are 7
Pink-footed Geese at Spiggie, a Hen Harrier at Brig of Bakkasetter,

The highlight was a first-winter male Common Yellowthroat trapped on
Foula during the afternoon. It is the third for Shetland, following single son
Fetlar in 1984 and Unst in 1997, but the first in autumn. Also on Foula were the
Pechora Pipit, 2 Little Buntings, the 3 Taiga Bean Geese, a
Common Rosefinch, and a Yellow-browed Warbler.
A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling is at Sandwick and the Richard's
Pipit is still there.
A Common Rosefinch is still at Norwick along with 8 redpolls,
including 6 trapped which included 4 Greenland Redpolls, a Mealy
Redpoll and
an exilipes Arctic Redpoll.
A probable Grey Phalarope was on the sea north of Noss.
There are 11 Pink-footed Geese and a Carrion Crow at Sandwick.
A Greenfinch is in Lerwick.

On Foula the bird of the day was a Citrine Wagtail at Burns while the
Blyth’s Reed Warbler and the Arctic Redpoll are still present
along with the 2 Goldfinches and a Common Rosefinch.
The Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler is still in the willows at Virkie.
The White's Thrush has been released at Kergord.
On Out Skerries there is a Siberian Stonechat which is believed to be
the first bird, which hasn't been seen for a couple of days. The Richard's
Pipit and a Common Rosefinch were also present.
There are still 2 Common Rosefinches at Norwick. There are 13 Grey
Herons at Loch of Vatsetter on Yell.
The American Golden Plover is still at Funzie, Fetlar, and there are
250 Snow Buntings and 4 Ruffs on the island.
Other migrants on Out Skerries included 24 Greylag Geese (in 4

Another White's Thrush has been found. It flew into a window at
Maywick and has been taken to the SSPCA at Gott. A total of three in a year is
unprecedented.
Another Pallas's Grasshopper Warbler has also been located, this time
in the willows at Virkie. This equals the previous record as there were four in
1997 (two on Fair Isle) and in 1998 (all on Fair Isle).
The Pechora Pipit and the Blyth's Reed Warbler are still on
Foula, along with 3 Common Rosefinches and 2 Goldfinches.
There are 2 Yellow-browed Warblers at Helendale and singles at
Scatness and Kergord, while there are still 2 at Collafirth in north Mainland.
There are Water Rails at Quendale and Virkie, a House Martin at
Quendale and a Gadwall, a Pochard, 3 Ruffs and 365 Rock
Doves at Hillwell. Two White-fronted Geese flew in off at Sumburgh
with 17 Barnacle Geese. A Curlew Sandpiper is at Scatness.
There are 2 Common Rosefinches at Norwick and the Richard's Pipit
is still at Haroldswick.
A Corncrake, a Bluethroat and 7 Lapland Buntings are on
Fetlar.
No new migrants on Out Skerries apart from 5 Barnacle Geese but the
Short-toed Lark, the Richard's Pipit, one Siberian Stonechat
and one Common Rosefinch are still present.

Foula is still the place to be with a Pechora Pipit discovered there
today. The Hametoun Pallas’s Grasshopper Warbler, the Blyth’s Reed
Warbler and the Yellow-browed Warbler are also still present.
On Out Skerries the second Siberian Stonechat, the Richard's Pipit,
the Short-toed Lark, the Great Grey Shrike and both Common
Rosefinches are still present.
On Fetlar, the adult American Golden Plover is still present and a
Corncrake, a Water Rail, a Bluethroat and a Linnet are
also present.
There are Richard's Pipits at Uyeasound and Haroldswick as well as 2 Yellow-browed
Warblers on Unst.
The Black Tern is at Scatness. There are Yellow-browed Warblers
at Toab, Hoswick and Vidlin. There are 230 Rock Doves at Sandwick and 500
Golden Plovers at Boddam.

2 Woodcocks, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 5 Common Gulls, the
Short-eared Owl, the Grey Wagtail, a White Wagtail, a Pied
Wagtail, a Dunnock, 2 Robins, 3 Whinchats, a
Stonechat, 8 Wheatears, 6 Fieldfares, the Mistle Thrush,
21 Song Thrushes, 20 Redwings, a Grasshopper Warbler, 3
Garden Warblers, 3 Blackcaps, a Chiffchaff, 5 Goldcrests,
a Chaffinch, 7 Bramblings, 2 Greenfinches, a Siskin,
2 Common Redpolls, 10 Lapland Buntings and 70+ Snow Buntings.

There are 2 Pallas's Grasshopper Warblers on Foula, one unringed bird
still at Hametoun at the south end of the island and another unringed bird at
Harrier at the north end of the island. A Blyth's Reed Warbler was also
trapped. The Arctic Redpoll is also still present along with
a Barred Warbler, a Yellow-browed Warbler and the
Red-breasted Flycatcher.
A White's Thrush was seen briefly in the mid-afternoon at Voe, in the
grounds of Voe House, and it was relocated there in the evening. A
Yellow-browed Warbler is at Collafirth along with one of the Saker-type
falcons.
The Yellow-breasted Bunting is still at Toab and there are 2
Grasshopper Warblers, a Yellow-browed Warbler and a Lapland
Bunting at Sumburgh, where over 200 Barnacle
Geese flew south during the day. There are 9 Pochards and a
Gadwall at Hillwell. The Siberian Stonechat is still at Quendale
along with 2 Yellow-browed Warblers. A Red-breasted Flycatcher is
at Geosetter.
On Out Skerries, the Short-toed Lark and both Siberian Stonechat
are still present along with a Great Grey Shrike, a Bluethroat, a
Richard's Pipit,
