There were 6 White-sided Dolphins in Lerwick harbour.

A 2.5 m long Basking Shark was seen off Norwick.


Monday 4th September 2006

A Minke Whale was seen off Lamba Ness, Unst, at about 19:00.

Risso's Dolphins in Mousa Sound - Dave Hall (2 photos); Jim Nicolson (2 photos)

A pod of Risso's Dolphins comprising at least 5 adult and 2 calves was in Mousa Sound in the afternoon.

There were Minke Whales seen from a boat off Noss in the afternoon, off Lamba Ness, Unst, at about 10:30 and in Mousa Sound at 18:30.

A freshly dead  beached White-sided Dolphin was found on the beach at Orr Wick at the top of Ronas Voe.

A Basking Shark was seen from the Out Skerries ferry about 1 km west of the islands.


Friday 25th August 2006

At least 10 probable White-beaked Dolphins were seen off Sumburgh Head.

Basking Sharks at Muckle Roe - Paul Harvey (2 photos); and at Reawick - Julie Redpath

At least 300 White-sided Dolphins were reported around salmon cages south of Unst.

A Basking Shark was off Reawick at about 13:30. There were also 3 Harbour Porpoises there a little earlier. Another Basking Shark was seen off Muckle Roe.

There were 2 Minke Whales off Otterswick.

About 100 White-sided Dolphins were south of Linga in Bluemull Sound.

A Basking Shark was in the bay at Uyeasound.

There were 2 Minke Whales in Colgrave Sound in the evening.

A Minke Whale was off Fladdabister in the morning.

A pod of 8 Killer Whales was seen about 1.5 km south of Bressay. There were Minke Whales off Lunna in the afternoon and in Selivoe.

A Minke Whale was in Bluemull Sound in the afternoon.

A Basking Shark was in Mousa Sound in the morning and 2 Basking Sharks were off Sumburgh Head at 12:45.

There were 8 Killer Whales off Lamba Ness, Unst, mostly females and juveniles but with one large bull seen. There were also 6 Harbour Porpoises offshore.

Four White-sided Dolphins were in Cat Firth in the late afternoon.

There were 6 Risso's Dolphins off Lamba Ness, Unst, heading north in diffuse pod.

There were 15 Harbour Porpoise around Score Holms, south of Fora Ness, at around 17:30.

A small Basking Shark, about 2.5m long, was seen form a rowing yoal north of St Ninian's Isle in the evening.

A school of 5 Harbour Porpoises and 2 Minke Whales were seen from Eshaness lighthouse at about 18:00.

At least 3 Risso's Dolphins were off Lamba Ness, Unst.

A pod of Killer Whales was in Mousa Sound at 09:30 and pod was seen in Bressay Sound at 16:15.

There were 12 White-sided Dolphins off Belmont.

There was a pod Killer Whales moving south off Hascosay at 08:40, and a different pod of 3 female Killer Whales off the south end of Linga in Bluemull Sound at 11:15.

Killer Whales off Noss - Tim Sykes

There were 5 Killer Whales in Noss Sound at 12.30 The bull drifted off after a while, but the remaining 3 females and an immature gathered in one spot, some 15 m from the shore, and took it in turns to dive (although they were only in a maximum of 3 m of water!). After about a minute, an Otter suddenly popped up in their midst, gasping for breath, pegged it for the shore, and virtually ran through the observers' feet! 

Another 3 Killer Whales were around the jetties off Sullom Voe at 19:30.


Sunday 9th July 2006

A pod of Killer Whales was seen going south through Mousa Sound at 10:15, but another pod of about 5 was first seen in Bressay Sound at 10:50 and were watched hunting seals off the Knab in Lerwick. Then at 16:00, a pod of 4 was seen just north of Noss.


Saturday 8th July 2006

A pod of Killer Whales first seen off Gulberwick at 11:20 were also seen from Quarff and later off Sandwick to at least 16:30.


Thursday 6th July 2006

A Minke Whale was north-east of the Holm of Melby at Sandness in the evening.

From the ferry in the Bluemull triangle 2 Risso's Dolphins were seen in the late afternoon. Up to 6 Minke Whales were north of Yell off Gloup and the north end of Bluemull Sound in the early evening.

There were 2 Minke Whales north-east of the Holm of Melby at Sandness in the evening. Another Minke Whale was seen off Fethaland, North Roe.


Monday 3rd July 2006

White-sided Dolphins in Basta Voe, Yell - Willeke Lanting & Vilmar Dijkstra

There were 4 Killer Whales off Scatness in the early evening and another pod was reported off Eshaness.

There were 12 White-beaked Dolphins off Hermaness.

The 5 White-sided Dolphins were feeding in Basta Voe, Yell, again.

Killer Whales in Yell Sound - Tony & Beth Gerrard

There were up to 10 Killer Whales in Yell Sound from about 14:00 to 17:00, gradually moving off SE past Lunna.

Two Minke Whales were seen off Noss at about 11:00: one moved east along the north shore and past the Noup and another was seen virtually simultaneously to the north of Noss Sound.

There were 5 White-sided Dolphins feeding in Basta Voe, Yell, in the afternoon.

A school of 50+ dolphins, presumably White-sided Dolphins, were fishing in Sand Voe, then Garderhouse Voe before moving off past Reawick late in the afternoon.

Basking Shark at St Ninian's Isle - David Tolliday

A lucky group managed to photograph two Basking Sharks: one was below the Sumburgh lighthouse at 13:00 and another was just offshore on the south side of St Ninian's Isle at 17:00.


Friday 23rd June 2006

There were up to 10 Killer Whales off Victoria pier, Lerwick, at 10:00. They moved south to be between Bressay light and Fladdabister at 13:00 and off Mousa from 15:00 to 19:00. They were seen taking as many as 11 seals during the day.

This now completes a week of daily Killer Whale sightings!

About 50 dolphins (probably White-sided) were in Yell Sound in early evening.


Thursday 22nd June 2006

Killer Whales off Levenwick - Austin Taylor (2 photos)

A group of 10 Killer Whales were spotted at Grutness 20:00. They were fast moving and often split into pairs or threes, with further sightings at Boddam 20:30, at Clumlie 21:15, Levenwick at 21:45, Channerwick at 22:00, and still at least 8 together off No Ness at 22:30. They were then watched from Mousa until 00:45!

There were also 5 Killer Whales, all females or immatures, in South Nesting Bay at 21:00.

A pod of Killer Whales was reported off East Burra some time during the day.

A Minke Whale was seen at about 16:00, some 4-5 miles NW of Burra.

There were 7 Killer Whales circling fish into a ball in Yell Sound, with Gannets diving in the middle of it all, sometime in the early evening.


Tuesday 20th June 2006

The same pod of 3 Killer Whales (one bull) was in Ronas Voe at 10:00.

A White-sided Dolphin was found stranded in  Dury Voe. It was an adult female and it has been sent south for post-mortem.

A Minke Whale went north past Noss at about 11:00.

A school of about 50 presumed White-sided Dolphins moved north off the Keen of Hamar at mid-day.

A pod of Killer Whales moved north through Bluemull Sound at mid-day.

A pod of 4 Killer Whales, 3 females and an immature, was off Hoswick at 17:30 and gradually moved south to be off Compass Head at about nine. A pod 3 Killer Whales (2 females with a small calf) went south through Noss Sound at 10:30.

A Minke Whale was seen off Balta Isle, Unst, at about 19:30.

This Risso's Dolphin has been washed up on Norwick beach and it would appear to have been killed by the discarded net attached to its tail fluke. Strangely, another large cetacean, either a Risso's Dolphin or a Pilot Whale but without an net on the tail was washed up on Skaw beach on Unst a week ago.

Three Killer Whales moved south through Bluemull Sound at about 10:00, while Minke Whales have been sighted almost daily in August in Yell Sound.

There were 10 White-sided Dolphins including 2 calves off Tresta.

A Minke Whale was in Balta Sound.

There were 6 Killer Whales off Hodden, Foula - no bull present.

A bull Risso's Dolphin and then a presumed female with a smaller presumably younger animal were seen about half-way between Ve Skerries and Papa Stour.

Killer Whales off Cunningsburgh - Steve Minton

A pod of 5 or 6 Killer Whales was off Mousa at 14.30, 3 were off Cunningsburgh at 5 pm and presumably the same were seen chasing moulting Eiders in Lerwick harbour at about 7 pm.

A Minke Whale was seen off Lamba Ness, Unst.

A pod of about 30 White-sided Dolphins is in Basta Voe, Yell.

A Basking Shark was seen briefly off Skaw, Unst, in the morning and 3 Killer Whales moved south past Hermaness in the afternoon.

A Minke Whale, 3 Killer Whales and a possible Humpback Whale were seen off Eshaness by a fisherman who had also seen 3 Sperm Whales and almost daily Minke Whales in the previous week.


Sunday 31st July 2005

A fisherman reported a 2m long Leatherback Turtle at around 8pm, a few km off Skelda Ness. A Minke Whale was in the same area and another was off Eshaness.

A Minke Whale swam through Noss Sound and another was seen at the back of Foula.

A Minke Whale was off  the east side of Mousa, heading north, and 2 more about 5 km south of Sumburgh Head.

At least 50 White-sided Dolphins were off Neapaback, Yell. What were presumably the same 50 dolphins were in Bluemull Sound on 9th and 10th.

This Basking Shark was off Eshaness in the evening.

There were 2 Killer Whales in Yell Sound.

There were reports of 2 Killer Whales off Sumburgh Head and also 4 taking Eiders.

There were 2 Basking Sharks in South Nesting Bay.

There were 3 Killer Whales off Reawick while hundreds of White-sided Dolphins were seen about 70 km north of Muckle Flugga.

A Basking Shark was in Urafirth, Hillswick.


Thursday 30th June 2005

The 2 White-sided Dolphins, which had been in Weisdale Voe since Monday, were reported stranded at the top of the voe. They were put back in the water and later in the day both dolphins were at the Cott side of the voe and seemed to be swimming better.

A pod of 5 Killer Whales moved past Bressay Lighthouse at 4am.

There are at least 12 Sperm Whales between Noss and the Bard of Bressay. Such large groups are not quite unprecedented in Shetland waters as a group were seen from the Fair Isle ferry a few years ago but it is very unusual to see a group so close inshore, while this group apparently included females and a calf.

The 2 White-sided Dolphins are still in Weisdale Voe and pod of Killer Whales moved past Mossbank at tea-time. A group of 12 Harbour Porpoises were close inshore at Sumburgh Head.

A pod of 5 Killer Whales were seen in Yell Sound.

A Minke Whale was in Mousa Sound.

A Minke Whale was seen from the MV Julie Rose off Lamba Ness, Unst.


Friday 24th June 2005

A school of 20 White-sided Dolphins were about 1.5km east of Fladdabister early evening (SIBC was reporting that the Killer Whales were back in Brei Wick, Lerwick, in the morning but this was the dolphins).

There were 2 Basking Sharks in Mangaster Voe, north of Brae.


Monday 20th June 2005

A pod of 5 Killer Whales seen off the Knab the Bard of Bressay in the morning then moved round to Noss where they hung around for at least 2 hours. They moved off south at about 4pm and were seen off Noness and Levenwick in the evening.

Also at lunchtime there was a report of another pod of 3 Killer Whales seen at Noness, Sandwick and were presumably those seen later off Compass Head.

Another 2 Killer Whales, one a bull, were seen off Hermaness.

A distant pod of Killer Whales was seen from Hermaness beyond Muckle Flugga.


Monday 13th June 2005

A pod of 7 Killer Whales (a bull, 4 females and 2 calves) moved through Bluemull Sound.

A dead Risso's Dolphin has been found at Noness, Sandwick. From the pictures Ron Patterson took it appears to be a fairly old animal and has lots of scaring.

A Minke Whale is feeding off Reawick.

Five Killer Whales first seen moving north off Aithsetter were also seen off Gulberwick, Breiwick and Noss. The adult bull was identifiable as an animal that has been seen in Shetland before.

There were c20 White-sided Dolphins at the head of Basta Voe, Yell, in the late afternoon.

There were also reports of a whale - probably Minke - off Reawick that had also been around the night before.
