Wednesday 1st July 2009

Approximately 20 Killer Whales were about 5 miles offshore of the mouth of Bluemull Sound today. They were feeding on herring using what appeared to be the carousel feeding technique, whereby the whales herd the herring by swimming in circles around the herring and then tail-slap them to stun them. There were a number of dead herring and swim bladders at the surface. The whales eventually changed behaviour and started travelling north. It is thought that these were different individuals to those seen in the same area on 29th June. A match has been made of a male with the Icelandic catalogue (Icelandic ID number: 9479) who was photographed off SE Iceland in November 1995.

Killer Whales near Bluemull Sound - Andy Foote. The photo on the left is of Icelandic individual '9479', with the second photo being of the same individual when it was off Iceland in November 1995. The third and fourth photos are of other members of the pod near Bluemull Sound today. The right hand photo is a screenshot from video footage taken with an underwater polecam.

Also present was a male with scoliosis (twisted spine), which had also previously been photographed by Mark Breaks off Fair Isle.
