Tuesday 31st March 2009

Collared Dove on Out Skerries - Peter Flint

5 Greenfinches, 5 Chaffinches and a Robin are at Cullivoe. 7 Greenfinches and 4 Chaffinches are at Baltasound.

The Knot is still at Virkie and 2 Shoveler are at Spiggie. A drake Scaup is at Loch of Clickimin, a Grey Wagtail is in Lerwick and a Collared Dove is feeding fledged young in Lerwick.

A Collared Dove is on Out Skerries.

Monday 30th March 2009

Whooper Swans at Tingwall - George Petrie

5 Greenfinches and 5 Chaffinches are at Cullivoe.

A Stock Dove is at Firth. A Goosander is at Weisdale Voe and 2 Jackdaws roosted at Kergord. A Knot is at Virkie.

Sunday 29th March 2009

Robin at Mossbank - Kareen Hunter

A pair of Goosanders are at Strand Loch and 11 Whooper Swans are at Loch of Tingwall. A White Wagtail and a Woodcock are at Quendale. A Robin is at Mossbank.

A Greenfinch, 3 Chaffinches and a Robin are at Cullivoe.

Saturday 28th March 2009

Cormorant at Sandwick - George Petrie

There are 12 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull in the Gremista/Catch area of Lerwick. A drake Scaup is at Loch of Clickimin and a Greenfinch is at Helendale.

On Yell, 4 Chaffinches and a Greenfinch are at Cullivoe and 6 Whooper Swans are at Wick of Garth Ness.

Friday 27th March 2009

Greenfinch at Scatness - Steve Minton; Purple Sandpiper at Sandwick - Jim Nicolson; Brent Goose on Fetlar - Malcie Smith

A dark-bellied Brent Goose is on Fetlar, along with 2 Chaffinches, a Greenfinch and 2 Wood Pigeons. On Yell, a Greenfinch and a Chaffinch are at Cullivoe and 6 Whooper Swans are at Wick of Garth Ness.

A Greenfinch is at Scatness and a Wood Pigeon is at Virkie. 28 Purple Sandpipers are at Sandwick. A Wood Pigeon is at Wester Quarff.

A Jackdaw, 7 Greenfinches, 5 Chaffinches, 3 Redwings and a Fieldfare are on Out Skerries.

Robin at Sumburgh Head - George Petrie

A Robin is at Sumburgh Head and 215 Turnstones are at the Wart, Sandwick.

A Chaffinch is on Out Skerries.

Wren at Sandwick - Jim Nicolson

On Unst the Tundra Bean Goose and European White-fronted Goose are at Norwick and the Shore Lark is still at Lamba Ness.

An Iceland Gull is at Lerwick Harbour and an alba wagtail is at Tesco. A Wood Pigeon is at Virkie.

8 Iceland Gulls are at Gremista. A Pied Wagtail is at Grutness and a Robin is at Sumburgh Head.

Saturday 21st March 2009

There are 3 male Northern Eiders off Sound Gruney in Bluemull Sound.

A Common Redpoll, a Sparrowhawk and 3 Chaffinches are at Wester Quarff. A Goldcrest and a Pied Wagtail are at Virkie, 2 Gadwall are at Scatness, an Iceland Gull is at Hillwell and 2 Slavonian Grebes and a White-fronted Goose are at Spiggie. A drake Pintail is at Boddam and a male White Wagtail is at Quendale.

On Unst an adult Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth, 7 Whooper Swans are at Uyeasound, a Snow Bunting is at Skaw and a Robin is at Saxa Vord.

8 Whooper Swans are at Gutcher. An alba wagtail is on Out Skerries.

Long-tailed Ducks and Iceland Gull at Lerwick - Jason Atkinson; Swan Goose at Vidlin (presumably near it's owner) - Lynsey Garrick

A Yellowhammer is on Fetlar.

A Glaucous Gull and 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls are at Virkie.

Shore Lark at Lamba Ness and Shag at Belmont - Rob Brookes; Bean Goose and Greylag Goose at Sandwick - Jim Nicolson

 Goosander at Strand - Gary Bell; Wigeon at Nesting and Tufted Duck at Tingwall - Charles Gifford

A Tundra Bean Goose and a Pink-footed Goose are still at Sandwick. A Waxwing and 2 Pied Wagtails are at Scatness.

The Ring-necked Duck is still at Loch of Asta and 2 Goosanders are at Strand Loch.

The Shore Lark is still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

Two male Stonechats are on Out Skerries.

Wednesday 18th March 2009

A Chiffchaff is at Virkie, a Wood Pigeon is at Toab, and a Glaucous Gull and an adult Peregrine Falcon are at Quendale.

Tuesday 17th March 2009

Rock Pipit at Lerwick - George Petrie; Lapwing at Spiggie - Charles Gifford; Mute Swan and Otter at Girlsta - Paula Moss; Glaucous Gull at Scatness - Gary Bell; Great Black-backed Gull feeding on migrating sheep - Steve Minton

The Ring-necked Duck and a male Scaup are at Loch of Asta and there are 2 Goosanders at Strand.

A Rook is on Out Skerries.

A Stonechat is at Burrafirth and the male Goosander is still at Uyeasound.

Glaucous Gulls are at Sumburgh and Scatness.

Raven and Glaucous Gull at Scatness - Steve Minton; Twite and Fulmar at Sumburgh - Jim Nicolson

A male Ring-necked Duck, presumably a returnee, is on Loch of Asta, along with a male Scaup. The Coal Tit is at Sandgarth, Voe.

A Jack Snipe is at Quendale.

The Shore Lark is still at Lamba Ness and a Greenfinch is at Baltasound.

There are 2 Greenfinches on Out Skerries.

A pair of Collared Doves in Lerwick have chicks in the nest.

Collared Dove in Lerwick - Charles Gifford; Snow Bunting at Quendale - John 'Crieffy'

A Tundra Bean Goose and a Pink-footed Goose are at Sandwick. A Dunnock, a Robin and 2 Stonechats are at Sumburgh Head and a Pintail is at Boddam.

A Stonechat and a Mistle Thrush are on Fetlar.

A Stonechat is at Northdale on Unst, 2 Glaucous Gulls are at Burrafirth, 4 Wood Pigeons are at Baltasound and a Goosander is at Uyeasound.

Gannets at Sumburgh and Purple Sandpiper at Boddam - Gary Bell; Turnstone and Ringed Plover at Sandness - Charles Gifford

There are 2 Goldcrests on Trondra.

There were 46 Great Northern Divers between West Burrafirth and Papa Stour.

Friday 13th March 2009

Long-tailed Duck at Lerwick - George Petrie; Snow Bunting at Garths Ness - Steve Minton

The Shore Lark is still on Lamba Ness, a Rook and a Woodcock are at Norwick and a Little Grebe is at Baltasound.

An adult male Peregrine Falcon is at Firth, a female Shoveler is at Loch of Trondavoe, near Scatsta, and 2 male Scaups are at Lochend. There are 5 Iceland Gulls at the Catch in Lerwick.

A Slavonian Grebe and 3 Red-throated Divers are on Loch of Spiggie and a second-winter Glaucous Gull is at Scatness.

There are 2 Lesser Black-backed Gulls at Baltasound.

Garganey at Burrafirth - Wendy Dickson; Goosanders at Strand and Coot at Tingwall - George Petrie; Shelduck at Spiggie - Charles Gifford

A male Garganey is at Burrafirth, equalling the earliest-ever Shetland record, on Fair Isle on 11th March 1973. There are 2 Mistle Thrushes at Burrafirth.

A Pied Wagtail is at Rova Head, Lerwick, there are 9 Iceland Gulls and 3 Glaucous Gulls in Lerwick, and 29 Knots at the Sletts, with 2 Greenfinches and 3 Chaffinches in a garden there most days. A Coot is at Loch of Tingwall and 4 Goosanders are at Strand Loch.

There are 2 Glaucous Gulls at Scatness.

Tuesday 10th March 2009

Mistle Thrush at Lamba Ness - Mike Pennington; Merlins at Dalsetter - Gary Bell; Long-tailed Ducks and Iceland Gulls at Lerwick - Steve Minton; Long-eared Owl in Lerwick - Juan Brown

The Shore Lark and the Mistle Thrush are still at Lamba Ness on Unst.

A Long-eared Owl was picked up dead in Lerwick.

There are 47 Purple Sandpipers at Melby and 120 Wigeons at Norby.

The Shore Lark and a Mistle Thrush are at Lamba Ness on Unst and a Lesser Black-backed Gull is at Baltasound.

There are 4 Goosanders at the mouth of the Burn of Weisdale.

There are 2 Goosanders at the mouth of the Burn of Weisdale.

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, along with the Shore Lark, while there are 2 Glaucous Gulls and an Iceland Gull at Burrafirth.

An Iceland Gull is at Quendale, a Glaucous Gull is at Virkie and 2 European White-fronted Geese are at Spiggie.

Black Guillemot and Iceland Gull in Lerwick; Red Grouse at Nesting - Hugh Harrop; Skylark at Skaw - Wendy Dickson; Snow Bunting at Skaw - Rob Brookes

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, and a Moorhen is at Norwick.

There are 8 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls in Lerwick. Another 7 Iceland Gulls are at Laxo. A male Pheasant is at Catfirth.

There are 3 Woodcocks at Geosetter and the Mallard x Pintail hybrid is still at Scatness.

Thursday 5th March 2009

Turnstone and Purple Sandpiper at Scatness - Hugh Harrop; Whooper and Mute Swans at Uyeasound - Wendy Dickson

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, and the Tundra Bean Goose is still at Norwick, along with the White-fronted Goose, while there is a Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth. There are 2 Goosanders on Loch of Snarravoe.

A Tundra Bean Goose and a Pink-footed Goose are at Sandwick, and a Glaucous Gull is at Maywick. The dark juvenile Peregrine Falcon is still around, this time at Quendale.

A Pink-footed Goose is still on Fetlar.

A Water Rail and a Dunnock are on Out Skerries.

Wednesday 4th March 2009

Long-tailed Ducks at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

A new Tundra Bean Goose is at Norwick, along with a White-fronted Goose, while the flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

There are 3 Iceland Gulls at the Catch in Lerwick. Two adult Greenland White-fronted Geese are at Spiggie.

A Common Redpoll is on Out Skerries.

A Tundra Bean Goose is at Spiggie and a Woodcock is at Scousburgh. A Hen Harrier is at Brindister, south of Quarff.

There are 8 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls around the Catch in Lerwick. A Goosander is on Strand Loch.

A Lesser Black-backed Gull is at Quarff.

A female Sparrowhawk is at Unifirth in west Mainland.

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, along with the Shore Lark.

An adult Glaucous Gull is at Rova Head and 3 Iceland Gulls are at Lerwick.

A Tundra Bean Goose was at Ireland and later at Maywick and a Greenland White-fronted Goose is at Maywick. A big ugly Iceland Gull showing characters of Kumlien's Gull is at Quendale. Several Skylarks were heard in song in Dunrossness.
