Tuesday 30th June 2009

Common Crossbill at Baltasound - Mike Pennington; Common Crossbill at Scatness - Steve Minton

Common Crossbills today on mainland included 23 south over Lerwick in 3 groups between 08:00 and 09:00, 11 at Lower Voe, 9 at Scousburgh, 4 at Virkie, 4 at Scatness and 1 at Toab.

Common Crossbills today on Unst included 30 at Norwick, 4 at Valyie, 3 at Halligarth, 3 at Setters Hill Estate, 1 at Baltasound and 30+ south during the day in various-sized groups. A Hobby was photographed between Norwick and Skaw.

12 Common Crossbills are on Out Skerries.

Common Crossbills on Unst - Jim Nicolson (2 photos); Common Crossbill at Virkie - Gary Bell; Puffins, Bonxie and Golden Plover at Hermaness - Alastair Wilson

Common Crossbills today included 20 at Twatt, 20 at Sumburgh Head, 10 at Virkie and 5 at Toab.

On Unst there are 40+ Common Crossbills in various groups and locations, including up to 12 at Lamba Ness. 2 Swifts and a House Martin are at Norwick.

5 Common Crossbills are on Out Skerries.

Common Crossbills at Northdale - Rob Brooks

A Marsh Warbler is singing at Voe. Common Crossbills today included 30 at Sandwick, 20 at Cunningsburgh, 20 at Sumburgh Head, 20 at Virkie and 2 at Toab.

On Unst 9 Common Crossbills and a Lesser Whitethroat are at Halligarth, 3 Common Crossbills are at Northdale and 9 are at Baltasound.

8 Common Crossbills are on Out Skerries.

4 Common Crossbills are at West Sandwick, Yell.

Saturday 27th June 2009

Greylag Geese at North Garth - Andy Gear

45 Common Crossbills are at Kergord, 23 are at Swinister Burn, Sandwick, 30 flew over Market Street, Lerwick and 1 is at Helendale. A Greenshank and 2 Swifts are at Virkie. A Cuckoo is at Kergord and a Wood Pigeon is on Trondra.

On Unst 16 Common Crossbills flew over Lamba Ness, 3 Common Crossbills are at Baltasound and a Wood Pigeon is at Burrafirth.

4 Siskins are on Out Skerries.

Friday 26th June 2009

An adult Long-tailed Skua drifted north at Sei Water this afternoon. 24 Canada Geese are at Eshaness. Common Crossbills today included 45 at Kergord, 21 over Stany Hill, North Nesting, 16 over Toft, 12 at Lower Voe, 10 at Sandwick, 5 over Virkie, 4 at Sumburgh Head and 1 at Toab. A Chiffchaff is at Scousburgh.

Canada Geese at Eshaness and Tufted Duck at Hillswick - Charles Gifford; Common Crossbill at Halligarth - Rob Brookes; Marsh Warbler at Virkie - Roger Riddington

The drake Lesser Scaup is still at Loch of Benston. 12 Canada Geese are at Eshaness and 2 Common Redpolls are at Catfirth. A Marsh Warbler was trapped and ringed at Virkie, 3 Swifts are at Spiggie and the Marsh Warbler is still singing at Hoswick.

A Golden Oriole is at the Saxa Vord resort, Haroldswick, 16 Common Crossbills are still at Halligarth and 14 Swifts are at Haroldswick.

A Quail is calling at Voehead, Bressay.

Wren, Turnstones and Gannet at Clevigarth - John Moncrieff

A ringtail Hen Harrier is at Camb, Yell.

18 Common Crossbills are at Halligarth, Unst.

20 Common Crossbills are at Kergord and a Common Crossbill is at Sandwick. A Sandwich Tern flew west at Virkie this morning and 3 Swifts are at Sumburgh Head.

Quails at Ungirsta - Dougie Preston; Sandwich Terns at Haroldswick - Rob Brookes

A Hobby is at Voe and the drake Lesser Scaup is still at Loch of Benston. A Long-tailed Skua was at Kettla Ness for 15 minutes this afternoon.

On Unst there are 2 Quails at Ungirsta, about 6 Common Crossbills still at Halligarth and 2 Sandwich Terns at Haroldswick.

Crossbill at Halligarth - Rob Brookes

The drake Lesser Scaup is still at Loch of Benston and 8 or 9 Crossbills are at Kergord. A Quail is at Strom Ness.

On Unst the 10 Common Crossbills and a singing Marsh Warbler are at Halligarth, the first-summer Iceland Gull is still at Norwick and 4 Sanderlings are at Skaw. A Quail calling at Ungirsta has been present for about a month. An Osprey flew out to sea at Saxa Vord.

There are 10 Common Crossbills at Halligarth.

The Quail and female Red-backed Shrike are still at Funzie, Fetlar.

The Little Egret is still at East Quarff. The Marsh Warbler is still singing at Hoswick, the Wood Duck is still at Hillwell and a Swift is at Virkie.

A male Common Crossbill is at Haroldswick.

The Lesser Grey Shrike is still at Clodisdale, Bressay.

A Red-necked Phalarope is at Scord beach. The Little Egret is now at Sullom Voe Terminal and the Marsh Warbler is still singing at Hoswick. Please do not trample vegetation at this site. A Quail is calling at Collafirth Hill.

A drake Surf Scoter is at Dales Voe, Delting. A Common Crane is at Mid Walls. The Marsh Warbler is still singing at Hoswick. Please do not trample vegetation at this site. 2 Sandwich Terns are in Bressay Sound.

The Marsh Warbler is still singing at Hoswick. Please do not trample vegetation at this site. The Curlew Sandpiper is still at Scatness. At least 5 Quails were singing early morning in the Hillwell/Ringasta area.

A Red-backed Shrike is at Funzie, Fetlar.

On Unst a Chiffchaff is at Norwick and a Lesser Whitethroat and a Chiffchaff are at Skaw, although there was no sign of the Moltoni's Subalpine Warbler there.

The male Subalpine Warbler is still at Skaw, Unst. It is calling like a moltonii and has plumage which fits this race. Informed opinions are welcome - photos of the bird are under 4th June and 1st June.

The drake Lesser Scaup is still at Loch of Benston and 2 Common Scoters and a Common Redpoll are at Catfirth. An Iceland Gull is at Bigton.

A singing male Common Rosefinch is at Sumburgh Hotel. The Wood Duck is still at Hillwell and a Chiffchaff is at Hoswick. 3 Common Scoters are at Catfirth.

A Snow Bunting and a Garden Warbler are on Fetlar.

On Unst the male Subalpine Warbler and a Chiffchaff are still at Skaw.

The Lesser Scaup and 3 Common Scoters are at Loch of Benston and a Wood Sandpiper is still at Henry's Loch, Quarff. The Wood Duck is now at Hillwell.

The 2 Wood Sandpipers are still at Henry's Loch, Quarff.

On Whalsay a Golden Oriole, a Spotted Flycatcher and a Robin are at Hamister, a Siskin is at Brough, a Chiffchaff is at Skaw and a Spotted Flycatcher is at Skiberhoull.

The Great Reed Warbler is still on Out Skerries, along with a Red-backed Shrike, a Lesser Whitethroat, a Whitethroat and 2 Willow Warblers.

On Unst a male Subalpine Warbler is at Skaw, along with a Lesser Whitethroat and a Chiffchaff. The Red-backed Shrike and Golden Oriole are still at Halligarth, the Iceland Gull is still at Norwick and a Sparrowhawk is at Baltasound.

An Icterine Warbler, a Red-backed Shrike and a Lesser Whitethroat are on Fetlar.

A White-tailed Eagle flew north over Loch of Lunklet at 15:30 and the Little Egret is still at Loch of Trondavoe. 2 Wood Sandpipers are at Henry's Loch, Quarff. The 6 Canada Geese and a Cuckoo are at Scatness, a Marsh Warbler is at Sumburgh Farm, 2 Common Redpolls are at Virkie and a Chaffinch is at Sumburgh Head.
