Saturday 28th February 2009

Coal Tit at Sandgarth - Tony & Beth Gerrard

The Coal Tit was back at Sandgarth, Voe.

A juvenile Tundra Bean Goose is at the Wart, Sandwick, along with 4 Skylarks.

On Unst, there are 2 Long-eared Owls at Baltasound, and an Iceland Gull, a Goosander, 2 Scaups and 2 Skylarks are at Uyeasound.

A Pink-footed Goose is still on Fetlar, with a summer-plumaged Red-throated Diver on Loch of Funzie.

The Glaucous Gull is still at Scatness.

The first Skylarks were seen and heard in weak song back on Out Skerries.

Friday 27th February 2009

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, and a Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth.

There are 2 Common Scoters off Scord, Sumburgh.

A first-winter Glaucous Gull is on

Thursday 26th February

Common Gull at Sandwick - George Petrie; Peregrine Falcon at Scatness - Steve Minton

Glaucous Gulls are at Sandwick and Scatness, and the dark Peregrine Falcon is still at Scatness.

There are 3 Chaffinches and 2 Greenfinches at the Sletts, Lerwick. There are 60 Grey Herons at Sae Water near Voe.

On Unst, 2 Goosanders are at Uyeasound, where 2 Mute Swans have returned.

Bean Goose on Whalsay - Brian Marshall

The Tundra Bean Goose is still above the Houb on Whalsay.

The Glaucous Gull is still at Scatness.

Bean Goose, and Greylags, at Bigton - Roger Riddington

The Tundra Bean Geese is still south of Bigton along with the juvenile Greenland White-fronted Goose.

Iceland Gull at Lerwick - Rob Brookes

A Peregrine Falcon is at Clousta.

The Tundra Bean Geese is south of Bigton along with a juvenile Greenland White-fronted Goose.

Sunday 22nd February 2009

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst, there are 2 Glaucous Gulls at Burrafirth and a Goosander at Uyeasound.

A Bean Geese (presumably Tundra) is at the Houb, Whalsay.

A Tundra Bean Geese is south of Bigton and a first-winter Glaucous Gull is at Scord.

There are 43 Grey Herons at Sae Water, near Voe.

A Goldfinch is at Wester Quarff.

Thursday 19th February 2009

There is a Black-tailed Godwit at Sandness along with 67 Ringed Plovers, a Red-throated Diver, 140 Wigeons and 31 Oystercatchers, with another 30 Oystercatchers at Bixter.

A Jack Snipe is at Wester Quarff.

A Hen Harrier is at Cullivoe.

Wednesday 18th February 2009

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

A Pink-footed Goose is on Fetlar.

A Peregrine Falcon is at Sullom Voe Terminal, along with 6 Whooper Swans and a Moorhen which have been there most of the winter.

There are 12 Great Northern Divers in Bay of Quendale and 92 Purple Sandpipers and the hybrid Mallard x Pintail at Scatness.

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

There are 2 Common Scoters off Scatness.

There are 4 Greenfinches at the Sletts, Lerwick.

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese and the Shore Lark are still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

Sunday 15th February 2009

Curlew at Boddam - George Petrie; Purple Sandpipers and Glaucous Gull at Scatness - Steve Minton

A White-billed Diver was in the Bluemull triangle, near Sound Gruney, at dusk.

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese is still on Unst, moving between Skaw and Lamba Ness, while a Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth.

The second-winter Glaucous Gull, a Peregrine Falcon and 38 Purple Sandpipers are at Scatness. A Jack Snipe is at Loch of Spiggie. There are 50 Twites, 26 Oystercatchers, 41 Purple Sandpipers and a Goosander at Bigton, 23 Whooper Swans, 200 Wigeons and a Coot at Loch of Spiggie, 2 Shelducks and 7 Bar-tailed Godwits at Pool of Virkie, and a Glaucous Gull at Clumlie.

Oystercatchers are starting to return to northern and western areas, with, for example, 8 at Garderhouse.

Saturday 14th February 2009

A White-billed Diver is in South Nesting Bay, the Coal Tit is still at Sandgarth, Voe, there are 3 Goosanders in the West Voe of Skellister, 4 first-winter Iceland Gulls at the head of Dury Voe, 4 more first-winter Iceland Gulls at Gremista, and 4 Slavonian Grebes in Catfirth.

There are 85 Tufted Ducks on Loch of Snarravoe.

Friday 13th February 2009

'Northern Eiders' in Bluemull triangle - Brydon Thomason; Blackbird and Fieldfare on Burra - Anne Peters; Red Grouse and Jack Snipe at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson

There are 2 male Northern Eiders, with 450 Eiders, off Sound Gruney in the Bluemull triangle, while a Common Scoter and a Velvet Scoter are also in Bluemull.

After several days absence, the Coal Tit reappeared at Sandgarth, Voe, and 17 Grey Herons flew over Voe. A Waxwing is at East Voe of Scalloway. There are 2 Woodcocks and a Jack Snipe at Loch of Clickimin and 4 Knots at the Sletts in Lerwick.

At Cunningsburgh, there are 2 Jack Snipes and 10 Red Grouse.

There are 3 Common Redpolls and a Water Rail at Baltasound.

Thursday 12th February 2009

Chaffinch on Burra - Anne Peters; Chaffinch at Girlsta - Paula Moss; Woodcock and Snipe at Fladdabister - George Petrie

A Peregrine Falcon is at Scatness. There are 5 Woodcocks around Ocraquoy and Fladdabister. A Puffin and 7 Red-throated Divers are off Wester Quarff.

A Water Rail is at Uyeasound.

Several Chaffinches and Redwings have moved into gardens around the islands with the snow.

Meadow Pipit at Cunningsburgh - George Petrie; Snow Buntings at Scatness - Steve Minton; Common Snipe at Haroldswick

A Meadow Pipit and a Jack Snipe are at Cunninsgburgh. The 2 Barnacle Geese are still at Scatness, 3 Pintails (a male and 2 females) are at Boddam, a Jack Snipe is at Sandwick and 37 Snow Buntings are at Hillwell.

There are 2 Greenfinches at the Sletts in Lerwick.

An Iceland Gull and a Skylark are at Norwick and 2 Common Redpolls and a Water Rail are at Baltasound.

Tuesday 10th February 2009

Goldeneye at Clickimin - George Petrie; Teals at Wethersta - Jim Ratter; Whooper Swans and Woodcock at Girlsta - Paula Moss

The 2 Barnacle Geese, the Pink-footed Goose, the Glaucous Gull, a Peregrine Falcon and a Skylark are at Scatness.

A Woodcock is at Girlsta. There are 115 Tufted Ducks and 2 Scaups in Brei Wick, Lerwick (Loch of Clickimin being frozen).

A Carrion Crow is at Mid Yell.

Monday 9th February 2009

Iceland Gulls at Norwick - Rob Brookes; Fieldfare at Spiggie and Hooded Crow at Sandwick - George Petrie

An adult European White-fronted Geese is at Spiggie.

A Water Rail is at Clickimin and 11 Knots are at the Sletts, Lerwick.

A Peregrine Falcon, a Merlin, a Skylark, a Song Thrush and a Water Rail are on Fetlar.

Sunday 8th February 2009

Pink-footed, Greylag and Barnacle Geese at Scatness - Steve Minton; Red Grouse at Toft - John Laurenson; Mute Swans at Loch of Tingwall and Strand Loch - Gordon Waddell; Herring Gull at Girlsta - Paula Moss; Fulmars at Lerwick - Jason Atkinson

A Pink-footed Goose, a Woodcock, 250 Curlews and 130 Lapwings are at Kebister Ness, north of Lerwick, and 3 Stonechats are at Greenhead, Gremista. Up to 5 different Glaucous Gulls and 11 Iceland Gulls (including an adult and a second-winter showing characters of 'Kumlien's Gull') have been seen in Lerwick during the week. A Red Grouse in a garden at Toft is an unusual sight!

There are 2 Barnacle Geese, a Pink-footed Goose, 270 Greylag Geese and a Glaucous Gull at Scatness.

Saturday 7th February 2009

Shore Lark at Lamba Ness - Rob Brookes; Merlin and Glaucous Gull at Sandwick - Jim Nicolson

The Shore Lark is still at Lamba Ness, a first-winter Iceland Gull is at Norwick and a Water Rail is at Baltasound.

There are 4 Redwings and the Song Thrush at the Sletts in Lerwick. There are 2 Woodcocks at Voxter.

A first-winter Glaucous Gull is at Sandwick. At Maywick, there are 3 Jack Snipes, a Woodcock and a ringtail Hen Harrier.

Two Glaucous Gulls and 2 Iceland Gulls (one an adult showing characters of 'Kumlien's Gull') flew along the cliffs at Eshaness.

Fieldfare, Purple Sandpiper, Snipe and Redshank at Sandwick - Jim Nicolson; Fieldfares at Sandwick - Hugh Harrop

The flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese are still at Lamba Ness, Unst.

The Tundra Bean Goose is still at Sandwick. There are 4 adult European White-fronted Geese at Ringasta and 2 Pink-footed Geese at Bakkasetter. A Song Thrush, 2 Fieldfares, a Chaffinch and a Greenfinch are at the Sletts, Lerwick.

Coal Tit and House Sparrow at Sandgarth - Jim Nicolson; Robin at Sandgarth and Red Grouse at Cunninsgburgh - George Petrie; Eiders and Fulmars at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

The Coal Tit, a Robin, 4 Greenfinches and a Chaffinch are at Sandgarth, Voe. The flock of Chaffinches at Veensgarth has increased to 220. There are 7 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull at Shetland Catch in Lerwick, a Stonechat is at the north end of Loch of Clickimin and 4 Knots, a Dunnock, a Song Thrush and a Chaffinch are at the Sletts.

The Tundra Bean Goose is still at Sandwick. A Jack Snipe and a Waxwing is at Wester Quarff. There are 3 adult European White-fronted Geese at and 5 (2 adults and 3 juveniles) at Ringasta while the long-staying second-winter Glaucous Gull is still at Virkie.

An adult Iceland Gull is at Uyeasound and there are 2 Oystercatchers at Skaw.

Tundra Bean Geese on Unst - Rory Tallack; Starling at Voe and Red Grouse at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson; Mallard and Golden Plover at Braewick - George Petrie

A flock of 7 Tundra Bean Geese are with Greylag Geese at Lamba Ness, Unst. A Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth. A Song Thrush is at Cullivoe on Yell.

A Sooty Shearwater was seen from a fishing boat 8 km W of Foula.

A pair of Goosanders and an Iceland Gull are at Laxo. A Water Rail is at Cunningsburgh. There is a Pink-footed Goose at Spiggie.

Long-eared Owl on Fetlar - Brydon Thomason; Raven at Bigton - Jim Nicolson

A first-winter Little Gull is at Belmont, Unst. There are 2 Bar-tailed Godwits at Hamnavoe on Yell and a Water Rail is at Loch of Kettlester.

There are 10 Slavonian Grebes, 3 Great Northern Divers and 2 Red-throated Divers off Wester Quarff.

Sunday 1st February 2009

The Tundra Bean Goose is at Sand Lodge, Sandwick. There are 2 Little Grebes and a Slavonian Grebe on Loch of Spiggie. Fieldfares have been widespread this month, with several hundred in Dunrossness today, along with a few Redwings.

There are 300 Golden Plovers, 85 Ringed Plovers, a Black-tailed Godwit, a Bar-tailed Godwit, 70 Teals and 200 Wigeons at Melby, and 30 Twites at Twatt.

On Fetlar, there are 2 Long-eared Owls, over 100 Fieldfares, 3 Redwings, a Song Thrush, 2 Robins, 400 Golden Plovers and 550 Greylag Geese. There are 2 first-winter Iceland Gulls at Burrafirth on Unst.
