December 2008 Sightings and Photos

Wednesday 31st December 2008

Black Guillemot at Lerwick - George Petrie; Bean Geese near Bigton and Pintail at Boddam - Gary Bell

2 Bean Geese are near Bigton. 3 Pintails are at Boddam and a Common Scoter is at Grutness. 2 Greenfinches and 3 Chaffinches are at the Sletts in Lerwick. 3 Slavonian Grebes are at Garderhouse Voe and 5 Whooper Swans are at Loch of Murrester.

A Black Redstart and a Song Thrush are on Fetlar.

On Yell 25 Whooper Swans are at Kirk Loch and 28 (presumably the same birds) were at Sand Water later. A Robin and a Song Thrush are at Cullivoe.

Tuesday 30th December 2008

4 Iceland Gulls are at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick and another is at Loch of Clickimin.

On Unst there are 3 Scaup at Easter Loch, 4 Slavonian Grebes and 20 Red-breasted Mergansers at Baltasound and 3 Great Northern Divers off Muness.

An Iceland Gull is at Symbister, Whalsay.

Long-tailed Ducks at Lerwick - Jim Nicolson

4 Glaucous Gulls are at Sand beach.

An Iceland Gull is at Symbister, Whalsay.

Wren at Scatness - Steve Minton; Teal at Lerwick - George Petrie

5 White-fronted Geese are at Baltasound. 2 Fieldfares, a Robin and 11 Whooper Swans are at Cullivoe.

Saturday 27th December 2008

Slavonian Grebe at Aith Voe, Bressay - George Petrie; Eider and Long-tailed Duck at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

An Iceland Gull, a Common Scoter and 26 Slavonian Grebes are at Sullom Voe and 8 Little Auks are in Yell Sound. A Waxwing is near the power station in Lerwick. There are 6 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick.

On Unst, a Waxwing is at Baltasound and 20 Snow Buntings are at Caldback Hill.

Friday 26th December 2008

Wren at Grutness - Charles Gifford; Iceland Gull at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

9 Iceland Gulls and 3 Glaucous Gulls are around Lerwick. An Iceland Gull and a Long-eared Owl are at Ocraquoy. A Common Scoter is at Grutness.

A Waxwing is at Baltasound and a Short-ered Owl is at Burrafirth.

Thursday 25th December 2008

Oystercatcher at Sandwick and Grey Heron at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson

The Black Redstart is still at Toab and a Glaucous Gull is at Sumburgh Hotel. An Iceland Gull, 40 Purple Sandpipers, a Merlin and 60 Wigeon are at Melby. A Merlin is at Ocraquoy.

A Pink-footed Goose and 78 Snow Buntings are at Baltasound.

Iceland Gull and Rock Pipit at Cunningsburgh - Jim Nicolson; Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

Eider, Guillemot and Long-tailed Duck at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

The Black Redstart is still at Toab. There are 6 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at The Catch in Lerwick. An Iceland Gull is at Cunningsburgh and another is at Loch of Clickimin. 30 Chaffinches and a Brambling are at Veensgarth, 6 Bar-tailed Godwits and a Shelduck are at Virkie and 3 Pochards are at Loch of Tingwall.

On Whalsay, an Iceland Gull is at Symbister and a Snow Bunting is at Brough.

A Black Redstart is at Toab. 8 Iceland Gulls are at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick and a Robin is at Scousburgh.

Leucistic Blackbird and non-leucistic Blackbird at Lerwick - Charles Gifford

There are 2 Little Auks in Bluemull Sound.

Pochard at Tingwall - George Petrie; Iceland Gull, Razorbill and Eider at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

There are 8 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick. 3 Pochards are at Loch of Tingwall.

Glaucous Gull and Iceland Gull at Lerwick - Gary Bell

Glaucous Gull, Iceland Gulls, Kittiwake, Eider and Long-tailed Duck at Lerwick - Steve Minton

There are 5 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick. A Glaucous Gull is at Scatness. 8 Whooper Swans are at Grunna Water and 3 Mute Swans are at Weisdale Voe.

4 Common Redpolls are at Baltasound and a Water Rail is on Out Skerries.

Friday 19th December 2008

On Whalsay there are single Iceland Gulls at Symbister and Hamister and a Pied Wagtail is at Saltness.

Thursday 18th December 2008

Presumed American Golden Plover at Baltasound - Rob Brookes; Shore Lark at Lambaness - Rory Tallack

On Unst a presumed American Golden Plover is at Baltasound, the Shore Lark is still at Lambaness and an Iceland Gull is at Haroldswick. A Little Auk, 3 Great Northern Divers and 650 Eiders are in Bluemull Sound.

In Lerwick there are 7 Iceland Gulls at the Shetland Catch, 4 Common Redpolls at North Road and 2 Greenfinches at The Sletts.

19 Whooper Swans are at Kirk Loch, Cullivoe.

Wednesday 17th December 2008

On Unst a Shore Lark is at Lambaness and 28 Whooper Swans are at Uyeasound.

A Greenfinch is at The Sletts in Lerwick. 2 Robins are on Out Skerries.

Tuesday 16th December 2008

There was no sign of the Ivory Gull on Fetlar today.

2 Common Scoters are at Grutness. 19 Whooper Swans and 20 Fieldfares are at Cullivoe, Yell.

Monday 15th December 2008

Ivory Gull on Fetlar - Brydon Thomason (5 photos); Hugh Harrop (3 photos); Lee Mott (4 photos); Jim Nicolson (2 photos); George Petrie (one photo)

Fighting Starlings - Gary Bell (these two birds were seen to wrestle with each other for several minutes and at one point lay for four minutes almost  motionless and locked in a claw and leg grip)

The first-winter Ivory Gull is still at Oddsta on Fetlar, although it was seen going inland to rest in a mire and later on in the day it was seen flying through the middle of the island towards Papil Water.

A Goosander is at Baltasound and a Glaucous Gull is at Burrafirth. A Sky Lark is on Out Skerries.

Ivory Gull on Fetlar - Brydon Thomason (4 photos), Malcie Smith (2 photos)

A first-winter Ivory Gull is at Oddsta on Fetlar.

There are 7 Iceland Gulls and 2 Glaucous Gulls at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick with further Iceland Gulls at Clickimin and Gulberwick. There are 3 Pochards on Loch of Tingwall and a male Goosander is on Strand Loch. At Sumburgh Head, 49 Little Auks and a Common Scoter flew past, while 11 Fieldfares are at Scatness.

There are 2 Glaucous Gulls at Burrafirth.

Saturday 13th December 2008

An adult Iceland Gull with some characters of Kumlien's Gull (dark outer webs to P10 and P9) is at the Shetland Catch in Lerwick along with 5 Iceland Gulls and an adult Glaucous Gull.

Another adult Glaucous Gull is at Boddam.

Friday 12th December 2008

There are 5 Iceland Gulls around Gremista and the Catch in Lerwick, and a Dunnock and a Blackcap are in North Road.

On Whalsay, an Iceland Gull is at Hamister, a Skylark is at Skaw and an adult Glaucous Gull is at the North Loch.

Thursday 11th December 2008

On Whalsay, Iceland Gulls are at Symbister and Brough, and a Merlin and 4 Chaffinches are at Saltness.

A Robin and Merlin are at Mid Yell. A Bonxie was seen 30 miles east of Bressay.

Glaucous Gull and Fulmar at Lerwick - George Petrie

A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Brough, Whalsay. A Glaucous Gull is at the Catch in Lerwick. There are 2 Chaffinches at the Sletts, Lerwick.

Tuesday 9th December 2008

There are 5 Iceland Gulls and a Glaucous Gull around Gremista and the Catch in Lerwick. A second-winter Iceland Gull is at Brough, Whalsay.

Monday 8th December 2008

A Blackcap is at Cunningsburgh. A first-winter Iceland Gull is at Brough, Whalsay.

Sunday 7th December 2008

There are 3 Iceland Gulls at Shetland Catch and 2 at Sandy Loch, Lerwick, wile 3 Scaups are on Loch of Clickimin. There are 2 Pochards on Loch of Tingwall. Another Iceland Gull is at Scord, Sumburgh.

There are 4 Glaucous Gulls at Burrafirth on Unst and a Common Redpoll at Baltasound.

Saturday 6th December 2008

Long-tailed Duck and Glaucous Gull at Lerwick - Hugh Harrop

Purple Sandpiper and Kittiwake at Lerwick - George Petrie; Iceland Gull and Black Guillemot at Lerwick - Jim Nicolson; Woodcock on Whalsay - Jason Atkinson

There are 6 first-winter Iceland Gulls and 3 Glaucous Gulls at the Catch in Lerwick. There are 22 Slavonian Grebes in Laxfirth, Tingwall.

There are 5 Slavonian Grebes, 2 Robins and a Water Rail at Baltasound and 2 Goosanders at Uyeasound. A Song Thrush is still at Cullivoe.

A first-winter Glaucous Gull is at Symbister on Whalsay and a Woodcock is at Brough.

Friday 5th December 2008

Fieldfares at Quendale - Gary Bell

A Coal Tit is still at Sandgarth, Voe.

There are 65 Fieldfares at Quendale. A Little Auk flew past Sumburgh Head and a Little Auk and a Slavonian Grebe are off Scord, Sumburgh.

A Song Thrush is at Cullivoe.

Whooper Swans at Spiggie - Hugh Harrop

There are 2 Siskins at Upper Sound in Lerwick. A male Hen Harrier is at Spiggie.

Tuesday 2nd December 2008

Whooper Swans and Teal at Spiggie, Great Northern Diver at Nesting - Hugh Harrop

A Scaup, 3 Moorhens and 6 Whooper Swans are at Sullom Voe Terminal. An Iceland Gull is in Scalloway and a Dunnock is in Lerwick.

A Common Buzzard is at Baltasound.

Monday 1st December 2008

There were 26 Little Auks seen in a seawatch off Sumburgh Head. A Waxwing is still at the Sletts in Lerwick.

A Goosander is at Uyeasound along with 2 Mute Swans, 26 Whooper Swans and 22 Red-breasted Mergansers.
